President Donald Trump has announced that the United States Navy will initiate a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, following Iran’s failure to fulfill its commitment to keep the strait open. This statement marks Trump’s first public remarks since recent discussions in Islamabad between the US and Iran ended without a resolution.
In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump criticized Iran’s actions in the strait, labeling them as “world extortion.” He further declared that the US Navy would take action to eliminate mines reportedly placed by Iran in the waters of the strait, and he ordered naval forces to intercept vessels in international waters that have paid fees to Iran for passage through the strait.
Regarding the Islamabad negotiations, Trump described the discussions as “going well,” but expressed disappointment over Iran’s reluctance to abandon its nuclear aspirations. Currently, Iran effectively maintains its own blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies are transported. Shipping traffic in the area has decreased significantly compared to levels seen before the onset of hostilities.
