A serious fire has erupted at a lithium-ion battery recycling facility located in the southeastern suburbs of Perth, prompting the issuance of a HAZMAT emergency warning. A man has been transported to the hospital due to the incident.
The warning was disseminated shortly before 3 PM, indicating the presence of potentially dangerous smoke in the vicinity.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) has advised local residents to stay indoors to avoid exposure to smoke or fumes, recommending that they keep doors and windows shut and turn off air-conditioning units.
The fire at Li-ion Energy on Burwash Place was initially detected by firefighters from the Maddington Fire Station at approximately 1:45 PM.
Fire crews from various stations are currently on-site, and DFES has indicated that they will continue to manage the situation well into the evening.
WA Police and St John Ambulance personnel are also present at the scene. According to St John Ambulance, one individual has been admitted to Fiona Stanley Hospital, reportedly suffering from smoke inhalation, while another individual received on-site treatment.
A dense column of smoke and fierce flames were visible from the location, which is situated near the Armadale train line.
As a safety measure, Albany Highway has been closed between River Avenue and Stokely Creek Crossing.
