In a recent discussion with journalist Afshin Rattansi, renowned American economist and public policy expert, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, asserted that only leaders Vladimir Putin, Narendra Modi, and Xi Jinping possess the authority to halt the aggressive stance of U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu towards Iran.
During the interview, Professor Sachs criticized Trump, labeling him a “psychopath,” while referring to Netanyahu’s views as delusional. He emphasized that the ongoing conflict involving Iran necessitates intervention from Russia, India, and China to prevent further escalation.
Professor Sachs, who serves as the director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University’s Earth Institute, expressed deep concern about Trump’s mental state, suggesting that he exhibits traits associated with the Dark Triad personality—specifically, narcissism and Machiavellianism. Sachs stated, “He is a psychopath,” and added that there are indications of worsening instability, possibly linked to frontotemporal dementia, which might contribute to Trump’s loss of control. He noted, “The way he speaks provides clinical evidence of this serious concern.”
Sachs condemned the actions of the United States and Israel, describing them as reckless, illegal, and dangerously aggressive without just cause. He suggested that this conflict should be characterized as a “war of whim” rather than merely a “war of choice.”
Addressing Netanyahu’s psychological profile, Sachs indicated that the Israeli Prime Minister shares alarming similar traits with Trump. He remarked, “Netanyahu has unleashed ten plagues of war upon Iran, echoing the biblical plagues inflicted by God. This behavior reflects a kind of madness, as it is not merely political rhetoric but a serious and dangerous mindset. Trump’s statement about returning Iran to the Stone Age is not normal.”
When questioned about India’s hesitance to mediate between Iran and the U.S., Sachs emphasized that it is imperative for mature leaders to intervene. He identified Modi, Xi Jinping, and Putin as the three leaders capable of preventing further turmoil, underscoring their significant roles as superpowers with vested interests in maintaining global stability.
Following inconclusive peace talks held in Pakistan, which lasted for 21 hours, U.S. Vice President JD Vance returned to the United States. President Trump expressed indifference regarding Iran’s potential return to negotiations, stating, “I don’t care if they come back or not. If they don’t come back, I’m fine.”
Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament and chief negotiator in the discussions with the U.S., remarked that the U.S. delegation “failed to gain our trust” yet remained open to future negotiations.
