Cyclone Maila Claims Lives of Over 11 Individuals in Papua New Guinea

Tropical Cyclone Maila has claimed the lives of at least 11 individuals in Papua New Guinea, prompting immediate relief efforts from the government.

Despite ongoing recovery operations, officials have reported difficulties in reaching isolated communities impacted by the cyclone.

In response to the disaster, the Australian government has committed $2.5 million to aid the affected regions.

The catastrophic effects of Tropical Cyclone Maila, which resulted in floods and landslides, have led to multiple fatalities in the country. Prime Minister James Marape noted that establishing contact with remote areas has proven to be a significant challenge. He assured that provisions for food, clean water, and temporary housing are being organized for those in need.

“We are receiving scattered reports, but we are dedicated to ensuring that every affected location, island, and community is reached,” Mr. Marape stated on Sunday while announcing his plans to visit the Milne Bay province, where extensive damage has been reported.

In Bougainville, an autonomous region pursuing independence, schools were suspended this week due to the cyclone’s destruction of crucial infrastructure like roads and bridges, severely affecting food supply chains.

Among the fatalities, eight individuals lost their lives in a landslide in this region. Access to Panguna, which hosts a once-prominent gold and copper mine, has been obstructed.

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has announced a $1 million allocation specifically to support Papua New Guinea’s response to the cyclone’s aftermath in both Bougainville and Milne Bay. An additional $1.5 million will be directed to the Solomon Islands, where remote communities in Western and Choiseul provinces have also suffered significant impacts.

“Our priority is to deliver essential assistance swiftly to those most affected in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea,” Ms. Wong remarked in her statement. “During crises, Australia stands united with our Pacific partners.”

The weather system associated with the cyclone began to weaken on Saturday and has since been downgraded to a tropical low.
