Haiti has announced a period of three days of national mourning starting on Tuesday, following a tragic stampede that resulted in the loss of 25 lives during a popular annual event at the Laferriere Citadel, a well-known tourist destination frequented by students and visitors.
In a televised speech, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé confirmed the mourning period and stated that the government would take responsibility for covering the funeral costs of those who perished in the incident.
Earlier in the day, Emmanuel Pierre, the head of the national civil protection agency, informed Reuters that the death toll had been revised from an initial estimate of 30 to 25.
The Laferriere Citadel, a historic fortress constructed shortly after Haiti gained independence from France in the early 19th century, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
