Michael Carrick has revealed that discussions regarding a new contract for Kobbie Mainoo at Manchester United are progressing positively, indicating that negotiations are “in a good place.” The 20-year-old midfielder, whose current contract runs until the summer of 2027, is anticipated to receive a significant pay rise to around £120,000 per week, a substantial increase from his existing salary of approximately £25,000 per week.
If Mainoo agrees to a new contract, it will mark an impressive comeback for the player, especially considering his decline in status under former manager Ruben Amorim. Mainoo had previously scored in United’s 2-1 FA Cup final win over Manchester City in May 2024 and had excelled for the England national team during that summer’s European Championship. Despite not being a starter in the league this season under Amorim, Mainoo has been a consistent presence under Carrick, which has led to his recall to the England squad.
Manchester United will host Leeds on Monday night, aiming to bolster their chances of qualifying for the Champions League. When asked if failing to secure qualification would be acceptable, Carrick replied, “I wouldn’t accept it, no. However, it’s less about acceptance and more about striving to finish as high as possible. We’ll see how it unfolds.”
The match against Leeds on January 4 marked the end of Amorim’s tenure, as the Portuguese manager was dismissed the following day following his controversial comments after the game. Carrick, who was on vacation in Barbados during this time, admitted he did not foresee stepping into the managerial role.
Lisandro Martínez is expected to fill the position left vacant by the suspended Harry Maguire at Old Trafford. Martínez last played in the 1-1 draw against West Ham on February 10, having been sidelined due to a calf injury.
