Sherfane Rutherford scores an impressive 71, yet Royal Challengers Bengaluru triumph over Mumbai Indians by 18 runs.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured an 18-run victory over the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, thanks to a disciplined bowling performance. RC Bengaluru set a formidable target of 240 runs, but Mumbai started positively until Rohit Sharma, who scored 19, had to leave the field due to injury.

His fellow opener, Ryan Rickleton, contributed a brisk 37 runs off 22 balls before being dismissed by Suyash Sharma. Although Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya each scored 33 and 40 runs respectively, Mumbai struggled to maintain their momentum, with Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir both scoring just 1 run. Sherfane Rutherford’s impressive 71 runs ultimately proved insufficient for Mumbai’s cause.

Earlier in the match, the top-order trio of Virat Kohli (50), Phil Salt (78), and Rajat Patidar (53) delivered half-centuries that propelled Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a commanding total of 240 for four.

Kohli and Salt formed a significant opening partnership of 120 runs, while Patidar and Tim David, who scored 35 not out off 16 balls, accelerated the scoring in the latter half of the innings, placing the defending champions in a strong position.

The innings began with Kohli hitting a remarkable flick for a six off Trent Boult, while he consistently found boundaries. Salt, however, took charge early on, targeting Boult and Hardik Pandya for runs.

Boult was dispatched over the boundary for a six, and Mitchell Santner faced the brunt of Salt’s aggression, conceding three consecutive sixes due to poor length deliveries.

RCB raced to 50 runs in just 4.2 overs, prompting Mumbai to recall Jasprit Bumrah for an additional over in the powerplay, a rare decision. This strategy yielded some success as Bumrah restricted runs in his last over, but RCB still ended the powerplay with 71 runs.

Salt then took on leg-spinner Mayank Markande in the eighth over, hitting three fours, while Kohli continued to score aggressively against Santner. In need of a breakthrough, Mumbai turned to Shardul Thakur in the 11th over, who managed to dismiss Salt, caught by Pandya, breaking the opening partnership at 120 runs.

Patidar, benefiting from some mediocre bowling, nearly matched the record for the fastest IPL half-century, achieving it off 17 balls. He began with a boundary off Thakur and capitalized on Markande’s poor lengths, smashing three consecutive sixes, quickly reaching 34 runs off just nine balls.

To stop the run flow, Mumbai tried to use Thakur for wide deliveries, but he often strayed off target. Salt’s aggressive start, combined with Patidar’s explosive middle-over performance, allowed Kohli to manage the strike effectively, eventually reaching his half-century before falling for 50 runs off 37 balls in the 15th over.

Despite conceding 22 runs in his opening over, Santner tightened his bowling afterward and concluded with the wicket of Patidar, who scored 53 runs off 20 balls, including five sixes and four fours.
