Hawthorn’s head coach, Sam Mitchell, has praised Fremantle’s ruckman, Luke Jackson, referring to him as a “unique player” in anticipation of their highly anticipated match in Perth. The Hawks are set to field Ned Reeves and Lloyd Meek in the ruck against Jackson, who has proven challenging for opponents due to his versatile skill set.
Hawthorn is optimistic that co-captain James Sicily will be available to play against the Dockers, who are currently riding a seven-game winning streak, on Thursday evening.
The Hawks are preparing for the unpredictability that Fremantle’s standout player Luke Jackson brings to the game. Currently placed third, Hawthorn will travel to Perth to compete against the second-placed Dockers, who have achieved victory in seven of their last eight encounters with the Hawks, losing only once at Perth Stadium in the past nine years.
Jackson’s performance will be pivotal in the upcoming clash. He will face off against Reeves and Meek in the ruck but also poses a significant threat as a forward. On average, Jackson records 27 hitouts, 19 disposals, six tackles, five clearances, nearly 12 marks, and contributes about one goal per game.
Mitchell commented on Jackson’s unique abilities, stating, “Having two ruckmen gives us, at least on paper, an advantage against teams with someone like him. However, Luke Jackson is quite a distinct player, and he will certainly challenge us and create difficulties.” He added, “We need to consider how we can test him defensively and establish our own threats. Some aspects of the game may not unfold as expected.”
Jackson’s effectiveness in the forward line was evident in the previous match, where he showcased his aerial prowess. The Hawks have devised several strategies to counter him.
Co-captain James Sicily’s role will be crucial in containing Jackson when he transitions into attack. Although Sicily faced an ankle injury during last week’s draw against Collingwood, Mitchell remains confident in his readiness to play against the Dockers. “Technically, he needs to complete training, but we anticipate he will be available,” Mitchell remarked.
Looking ahead to Thursday night, the Hawks coach believes this matchup will serve as a crucial measure of their progress. “I feel we have good player availability and are in decent form,” Mitchell noted. “Fremantle is clearly the top-performing team in the league with their seven consecutive wins. They possess a wealth of talent across the field and play in a very structured manner. The question is whether we can elevate our performance enough to compete with the best teams. Facing Freo in Perth will be a significant challenge, but we feel prepared.”
