Album Art Blunders: The Controversial Misspelling of Melanie C and Other Notable Missteps

Melanie Chisholm, widely recognized as Mel C or Sporty Spice, is celebrating her 52nd birthday. Time certainly seems to pass swiftly, but Mel C is experiencing a resurgence with her latest project.

Recently, she has released a new album, prominently titled “Sweat,” which has been advertised extensively. However, an unusual detail has surfaced regarding the album’s vinyl edition—it appears that her name is misspelled on the spine as “Melanine C.”

This typographical error was brought to light by Brad Bellman, a resident of Melbourne, who shared a TikTok video highlighting the mistake, humorously suggesting that it might lead to someone losing their job. Further investigation revealed that this error is not an isolated incident; Andrew Isaac from the UK remarked that all five of his vinyl versions feature the same misspelling.

Such typographical blunders are not unprecedented in the music industry. One notable example is the Electric Light Orchestra’s debut album in 1972, which was mistakenly labeled “No Answer” due to a miscommunication with the record label. The intended title was simply “The Electric Light Orchestra.”

Another example includes the Zombies’ 1968 album “Odessey & Oracle,” which was incorrectly spelled. The illustrator Terry Quirk later confessed that he had mistakenly thought he knew how to spell “odyssey.” In more recent history, Oasis’s album “Standing on the Shoulder of Giants” raised questions about whether it was a spelling error or a deliberate misquotation, reflecting the band’s characteristic irreverence.

It’s worth noting that misspellings are not limited to album titles; they can also occur in band names. For instance, Led Zeppelin intentionally altered their name to avoid being pronounced like the metal object associated with canines. Other bands such as Def Leppard, The Monkees, and Limp Bizkit have similarly embraced unique spellings.

One could argue that the misspelling of Mel C’s name on her album is a deliberate artistic choice reflecting her playful side, as “Sweat” marks her ninth studio effort. However, it does raise the question of how such errors can occur in the music industry.
