A man tragically lost his life when his vehicle collided with a wall at an underpass located on Tambreet Street in Majura shortly before noon.
Members of the Australian Federal Police were the first responders at the scene, attempting to assist the 68-year-old driver until paramedics arrived. However, the driver, who was alone in the SUV, was declared dead at the site of the accident.
Detective Sergeant William Stevenson from ACT Policing stated that the reasons for the vehicle leaving the roadway are still under investigation.
“At this time, there doesn’t seem to be any other vehicles involved, but that remains a crucial part of our inquiry into the incident,” Detective Sergeant Stevenson remarked. “Immediate life-saving efforts were initiated with the individual still in the car. CPR was commenced promptly inside the vehicle, followed by the use of a defibrillator.”
Detective Sergeant Stevenson also mentioned that he had reached out to the victim’s family in Canberra to inform them of the unfortunate news. “The family was completely taken aback by today’s events. They are very close-knit and have a strong support system, and they are currently traveling to Canberra from various parts of Australia,” he added.
The Major Collision Team from ACT Road Policing is conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, and authorities are preparing a report for the ACT Coroner. Additionally, police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage to come forward with information.
“The last known sighting of the vehicle would have been around the Majura area. The driver had a reason to be in that vicinity at that time,” Detective Sergeant Stevenson explained.
The ACT Coroner will determine the official cause of death, which could potentially increase the region’s road toll for 2026 to nine fatalities.
