US-Iran ceasefire on the brink of collapse as impasse strains both parties.

On Tuesday, the month-old ceasefire between Iran and the United States faced a significant challenge as reports emerged of Iranian missiles targeting the United Arab Emirates. This escalation occurred while U.S. naval forces continued their operations to re-establish safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

This missile strike marked Iran’s second attack on the UAE within a span of 48 hours. The incident followed U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s recent assertion that the fragile truce, which had temporarily halted hostilities in the region, remained intact despite the uptick in violence.

In a related development, the U.S. military announced the destruction of six Iranian small boats, along with cruise missiles and drones. This action was part of a broader initiative by President Donald Trump, who dispatched warships to assist stranded tankers in the strait under a campaign dubbed “Project Freedom.”

During a press briefing, Hegseth emphasized that the operation aimed at facilitating commercial shipping through the strait was a temporary measure, insisting that the ceasefire was still in effect. “We are not seeking conflict… Currently, the ceasefire is holding, but we will monitor the situation closely,” he stated.

As for Iran, there was no immediate official response to the latest developments. However, earlier that day, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf made a bold statement accusing the U.S. of violating the ceasefire. “The current situation is intolerable for the United States, while we have not even begun our full response,” Ghalibaf remarked in a social media post.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical passageway, transporting approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas under normal circumstances. However, since the U.S. and Israel commenced military actions against Iran on February 28, the strait has been largely inaccessible, leading to widespread economic disruption. Currently, over 800 vessels and around 20,000 crew members remain stranded west of this crucial waterway.

Iran has threatened to use mines, drones, missiles, and fast-attack boats, rendering the strait perilous for commercial shipping. In retaliation, the U.S. has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports.

The conflict, ignited by an Israeli airstrike that resulted in the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s former supreme leader, seems to have reached a deadlock. Iran faces severe economic consequences, which could worsen as it risks running out of oil storage capacity. Meanwhile, Trump is under increasing pressure both domestically and internationally due to rising fuel prices impacting the U.S. and global markets.

Both Washington and Tehran appear to believe they are on the brink of a significant victory, making them hesitant to offer substantial concessions to facilitate ongoing negotiations mediated by Pakistan.

Conflicting accounts from Iran and the U.S. emerged regarding incidents in the strait on Monday, with several merchant ships reporting explosions or fires, and the vital oil port of Fujairah in the UAE sustaining damage from Iranian missiles.

In Washington, Hegseth announced that the U.S. had successfully opened a route through the strait, claiming that hundreds of commercial ships were preparing to transit. However, only two U.S.-flagged vessels have been confirmed to have traversed the waterway thus far.

Iran refuted claims of successful crossings and alleged that the U.S. had targeted civilian and cargo ships on Monday, resulting in five fatalities.

Trump has downplayed the recent violence in the strait. During an event in the Oval Office focused on children’s physical fitness, he claimed that Iran “wants to strike a deal.” He referred to the situation as a “skirmish,” asserting that Iran had no chance against the U.S. and acknowledged their awareness of this reality.

Amidst these tensions, U.S. and Iranian officials held a round of face-to-face discussions in Islamabad last month, but efforts to organize subsequent meetings have not been successful.

Trump has frequently cited Iran’s nuclear program as a rationale for the ongoing conflict, insisting that Iran must relinquish its enriched uranium reserves to avert the development of nuclear weapons—a claim Tehran denies.

On Friday, Iran submitted a 14-point peace proposal to the U.S. through Pakistan, reportedly focusing on lifting blockades and establishing a new framework for managing the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian media characterized this proposal as a comprehensive peace plan aimed for implementation within 30 days, rather than merely a ceasefire.

Iranian state outlets reported on Sunday that the U.S. had conveyed its response to the proposal via Pakistan, and Iran was currently reviewing the details. A senior Pakistani official involved in the negotiations stated that “backdoor diplomacy” was ongoing, noting that both sides had made progress on several issues.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi indicated that peace talks were advancing with Pakistan’s mediation, cautioning the U.S. and UAE against becoming entangled in a “quagmire.”

Iranian state television confirmed the military’s attack on the UAE as a response to “U.S. military provocations.” Additionally, Iranian authorities released a map illustrating an expanded maritime area under Iranian control, which now includes parts of the UAE coastline beyond the Strait of Hormuz.

This map encompassed Fujairah and another Emirati port, Khor Fakkan, both of which the UAE has utilized to circumvent the blocked strait since the conflict’s onset.

The ongoing stalemate casts a shadow over Trump’s postponed trip to China, scheduled for May 14, as China remains Iran’s largest oil customer, accounting for 80% of its oil exports prior to the conflict and representing 13% of China’s total oil imports.

With fuel prices climbing and the global economy slowing, Trump faces a political challenge as the U.S. approaches congressional elections in November. A Democratic victory in either chamber could undermine his presidency, but thus far, Trump has dismissed domestic concerns.
