BJP Calls for Investigation into Atrocities in Bengal

On Wednesday, Suvendu Adhikari, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), announced the establishment of an inquiry commission aimed at investigating various “atrocities” that have occurred, specifically referencing incidents from Sandeshkhali to the RG Kar rape-murder case.

Adhikari noted, “When our manifesto was released, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that a commission would look into all the incidents from Sandeshkhali to RG Kar. Should any evidence surface, FIRs will be filed, and individuals named in those FIRs will face imprisonment. This was confirmed on that day. A retired High Court judge will oversee the investigation, and a retired Supreme Court judge will handle inquiries related to institutional corruption,” he explained.

As the Leader of Opposition in the outgoing Assembly, Adhikari also had a meeting with Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal. Following their discussion, he expressed gratitude towards the Election Commission for ensuring a peaceful and fair election process. He highlighted that this time, numerous residents from high-rise buildings in Bhabanipur were able to cast their votes, unlike before when access was restricted due to locked gates.

Regarding post-election violence stemming from the 2021 elections, Adhikari mentioned, “In 2021, the BJP established 355 safe houses, and around 110,000 individuals were displaced from their homes.”

Earlier in the day, Adhikari, who triumphed over outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur and secured Nandigram for the third consecutive time in the recent Assembly elections, indicated his intention to relinquish one of his two constituencies within ten days. “I will vacate one seat within ten days. The party will determine which constituency I will keep. I remain committed to my responsibilities towards the residents of Bhabanipur and Nandigram,” he stated, adding that the final decision would rest with the party’s central leadership. Adhikari won in Bhabanipur by a margin exceeding 15,000 votes and in Nandigram by over 9,000 votes against his nearest TMC competitor, Pabitra Kar.
