According to reports, a current Metropolitan police officer and four former officers are under investigation regarding their response to allegations of sexual abuse involving Mohamed Al Fayed.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has initiated an inquiry into the five individuals for possible misconduct, following allegations against the late Harrods owner, who passed away in 2023 at the age of 94.
Allegations of sexual misconduct against Fayed have been recorded since 1977, totaling over 400 claims.
The IOPC confirmed that the investigation concerning these officers, reported to have started in January 2025, pertains to allegations made against Fayed by four individuals.
In a statement provided to the BBC, the IOPC mentioned: “At this point, five individuals—a current Metropolitan officer and four former officers—have been informed they are under investigation for potential misconduct.”
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan police indicated that the force is collaborating with the IOPC in this inquiry regarding the five officers.
The spokesperson stated: “One serving officer and four former officers are being investigated for potential misconduct. Issuing notices does not necessarily mean that misconduct proceedings will ensue. Our investigation into individuals who may have facilitated or enabled offenses by Mohamed Al Fayed is still ongoing.”
In March, the Metropolitan police reported that a man in his 60s was questioned under caution about allegations of human trafficking and facilitating rape linked to the investigation into Fayed.
This development followed the questioning of three women by detectives between February 25 and March 5, who were also under suspicion of aiding and abetting rape and sexual assault, as well as assisting in the commission of sexual offenses and human trafficking for sexual exploitation.
Authorities indicated that no arrests have been made thus far, and the investigation remains active.
The Metropolitan police had previously announced that they were investigating individuals connected to Fayed who might have enabled him to commit over 400 sexual misconduct offenses, allegedly occurring over several decades from 1977 to 2014.
