Emergency services are actively addressing a significant fire at a recycling facility located on Lytton Road in Hemmant, Brisbane. Crews were dispatched to the site shortly after 3 PM on Thursday to manage the situation.<\/p>\n
The blaze has predominantly affected one of the facility’s sheds, impacting three out of four storage bays. As of Thursday evening, local area commander Inspector Rohan Wilschefski from the Queensland Fire Department reported that 13 fire trucks were still engaged at the scene.<\/p>\n
Due to safety concerns, Lytton Road has been closed in both directions, and drivers are urged to steer clear of the area. Inspector Wilschefski indicated that the facility primarily processes metals and batteries, including lithium types.<\/p>\n
“The fire originated in their storage processing area, primarily involving lead-acid and household batteries, with a smaller quantity of lithium batteries,” he explained. Authorities are also monitoring nearby waterways to prevent any potential chemical contamination.<\/p>\n
“Currently, the fire is largely contained within the storage zones, and firefighting crews will continue their monitoring and efforts throughout the night,” he added.<\/p>\n
In light of the toxic smoke produced by the fire, nearby businesses have been evacuated, and residents in the vicinity are advised to keep their windows and doors closed. Inspector Wilschefski reassured that there are no immediate concerns regarding the structural integrity of the building.<\/p>\n
