Operational since 1954, the Geelong refinery is situated in Corio, about 65 kilometers southwest of Melbourne. Viva Energy, the owner and operator, supplies fuel to various industries and consumers through its extensive network of 1,500 service stations under brands like Shell, Liberty, and OTR.<\/p>\n
The refinery processes up to 120,000 barrels of crude oil daily and produces various petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), jet fuel, avgas, marine fuel oil, low aromatic fuel, and raw materials for plastic manufacturing, which are utilized in food packaging, medical devices, and polymer banknotes.<\/p>\n
The fire erupted shortly after 11 PM on Wednesday, prompting emergency services to respond to reports of explosions. Upon arrival, they encountered flames reaching heights of approximately 30 meters, with one witness likening the sound of the fire to that of a powerful vacuum. Michael McGuiness from Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) reported that around 50 firefighters were deployed to combat the intense blaze.<\/p>\n
Although the fire burned for over 12 hours, responders managed to contain it by Thursday morning and extinguished it by midday. While investigations are underway to determine the cause, authorities do not suspect foul play. FRV attributes the fire to an equipment failure, exacerbated by a significant leak of liquid hydrocarbons and gases detected by on-site workers during the incident.<\/p>\n

Hazardous materials crews were also dispatched to prevent contamination of local waterways from the smoke and products of the fire.<\/p>\n
Professor Richard Brown from Queensland University of Technology highlighted that refineries are engineered to minimize the repercussions of accidents. He remarked that, although the incident was severe, the fire did not spread beyond the initial area of concern. Former refinery engineer Ross Stidolph stated that such large-scale fires in refineries are uncommon in Australia and other developed nations.
