During a recent town hall session with administrators, employees at the Liberty Bell Bay smelter received disheartening news regarding their employment status. The administrators from Ernst and Young announced that after the current payroll cycle concludes on April 24, there will be no additional funds available to compensate most of the workforce.<\/p>\n
According to Ernst and Young, a total of 216 employees are owed over $7.4 million, covering wages, superannuation, annual leave, long service leave, and other compensations. The situation raises concerns as efforts to find a buyer for the smelter, the only manganese processing facility in Australia, continue.<\/p>\n
Approximately 175 employees have been informed that they will face layoffs by the end of next week unless they opt for leave without pay. This announcement came during a meeting held on the Liberty Bell Bay site in George Town, near Launceston. The only personnel expected to remain will be a minimal support staff.<\/p>\n
This development occurs while administrators are evaluating offers from various potential buyers for the smelter, which ceased operations last year following the financial collapse of billionaire Sanjeev Gupta’s GFG Alliance.<\/p>\n
White Oak, a private equity firm and secured lender to GFG Alliance, appointed Ernst and Young as the administrators for Liberty Bell Bay at the end of March. Despite the challenging circumstances, the 216 workers have been reporting for duty to perform care and maintenance tasks.<\/p>\n
Last week, a last-minute agreement was reached between the administrators and unions, ensuring that employees would receive their wages and entitlements up until April 24. Chris Donovan, assistant national secretary of the Australian Workers’ Union, expressed deep disappointment with the recent updates regarding the layoffs.<\/p>\n
Donovan remarked, “This is truly the worst-case scenario for these employees, impacting not only them but also the local community of George Town, Tasmania, and potentially the entire nation. We are now facing the imminent closure of Australia’s sole manganese smelter.” He added that they are awaiting legal advice and further comments from the administrators regarding next steps.<\/p>\n
He emphasized the unions’ desire for Liberty Bell Bay to remain operational, noting that there are several prospective buyers interested in the facility. However, he pointed out the potential complications arising from the decision to lay off a significant portion of the workforce, which could deter these buyers.<\/p>\n
Donovan called on both state and federal governments to consider providing financial assistance to support the workers during this transition. Susie Bower, CEO of the Bell Bay Advanced Manufacturing Zone, indicated there is considerable interest from buyers in acquiring the smelter but warned that selling it would be more challenging without an available workforce.<\/p>\n
Ernst and Young had previously confirmed that employees would be compensated through April 24, but they have not clarified the prospects for ongoing payments thereafter. During a parliamentary session, Tasmanian Minister for Skills and Jobs Felix Ellis stated that the state government is unable to cover wages for Liberty Bell Bay employees. He reiterated that the responsibility lies with White Oak to fulfill its obligations to the workforce during the administration process.<\/p>\n
Federal Labor representative Jess Teesdale was present at the town hall meeting, and it has been reported that the federal government has not dismissed the possibility of offering funding support to Liberty Bell Bay in the future.<\/p>\n
In a report submitted to creditors, Ernst and Young detailed that 216 employees are owed over $7.4 million in various forms of compensation. Donovan expressed concern over the lack of assurance that the administrators would cover this amount, stating that the workforce is feeling disheartened amidst ongoing uncertainties regarding their employment and rising living costs.<\/p>\n
Tomorrow, discussions are scheduled between administrators, employees, and union representatives regarding the necessary redundancies, which are projected to affect around 170 to 175 positions. The administrators noted that the remaining essential staff would be crucial for maintaining limited operations should a successful sale occur.
