A court session has revealed additional information regarding the assassination of crime figure Gavin Preston at a cafe in Melbourne in 2023.<\/p>\n
The cafe\u2019s manager testified that Mr. Preston, who was seated outdoors at the time of his murder, typically preferred three specific tables inside the establishment, often choosing to sit in the same location whenever possible.<\/p>\n
Following the fatal shooting of Mr. Preston, two alleged assassins reportedly fled Melbourne in an upscale SUV, having ordered “snacks” for their journey to Sydney, as presented in court.<\/p>\n
Mr. Preston was killed, and his companion AJ Maghnie was injured during an ambush outside Sweet Lulu’s cafe in Keilor East on September 9, 2023.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors claim that the shooters, identified as Jaeden Tito and Rabii Zahabe from New South Wales, were hired by an unidentified party to execute the hit.<\/p>\n
Both men have entered pleas of not guilty and are currently undergoing a trial at the Supreme Court in Melbourne.<\/p>\n
The prosecution asserts that the shooters utilized multiple getaway vehicles, setting fire to two of them, and escaped the city in a prearranged car shortly after the incident.<\/p>\n
Chauffeur Jahanzaib Aslam testified that he received a booking via the encrypted messaging application Signal from an unknown individual who referred to themselves as “Feature” on September 8.<\/p>\n
According to Mr. Aslam, the request was for a vehicle to transport up to four passengers from Melbourne to Sydney, with the description indicating it would be \u201ctwo girls and two boys.\u201d He also noted a request for \u201csnacks.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the following day, shortly after 10 a.m., Mr. Aslam used his Audi Q7 SUV to pick up two men dressed in dark clothing at Koroit Place in Taylors Lakes.<\/p>\n
When he inquired about their trip to Sydney, the men claimed they were traveling for Christmas. Mr. Aslam noted a peculiar odor and that they were vaping, leading him to speculate it might simply be the smell of the vape.<\/p>\n
Throughout the journey, the men reportedly changed clothes during stops and whispered to each other, with Mr. Aslam overhearing one of them say, \u201cNow we are brothers.\u201d<\/p>\n
The driver admitted he did not have a clear view of the men\u2019s faces but suggested they might have appeared of Middle Eastern descent.<\/p>\n
In a significant detail shared earlier, the court learned that Mr. Preston was known for being vigilant about his surroundings and had \u201cnever\u201d opted to sit outside at Sweet Lulu’s cafe, except for the day he was shot.<\/p>\n
Patrick Christofi, a regular patron of the cafe, stated that he had observed Mr. Preston and his companions frequenting the establishment two or three times a week in the weeks leading up to the incident.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe always preferred to sit inside and was careful about his seating choices. The day of the shooting was the first occasion I saw him sit outdoors,\u201d Mr. Christofi relayed in his court statement.<\/p>\n
Cafe manager Lulu Blackmore confirmed that Mr. Preston had three favorite tables inside, all of which provided street views. \u201cHe would sit in the same spot whenever possible,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n
Ms. Blackmore added that Mr. Preston was easily identifiable due to his large stature, bald head, and prominent tattoos. She noted his consistent company, which included a woman she presumed to be his partner, a teenage boy, and a man in his twenties, known as AJ.<\/p>\n
On the day of the incident, AJ Maghnie was seated next to Mr. Preston and sustained gunshot wounds to his abdomen.<\/p>\n
Witness accounts described the rapid unfolding of events during the shooting, with two men dressed in black and concealing their faces executing the attack and fleeing the scene in under ten seconds.<\/p>\n
Mr. Christofi recounted seeing Mr. Preston drop to the ground after being shot, and local resident Colin, from a nearby shop, provided towels to assist, while Mr. Christofi approached Mr. Preston, who was lying in a pool of blood yet still breathing.<\/p>\n
Police Officer Brad Douglas attempted to perform chest compressions on Mr. Preston until it became clear he had succumbed to his injuries.<\/p>\n
Officer Douglas later escorted Mr. Maghnie to the hospital in an ambulance, where, when questioned about the shooting, Mr. Maghnie claimed he did not see the attackers or any vehicles involved.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors indicated that Mr. Maghnie is not set to testify in the trial and has not been forthcoming with information, as noted by prosecutor Kristie Churchill SC.<\/p>\n
The jury was shown photographs from the crime scene and footage provided by police, which included the still-visible body of Mr. Preston alongside two glasses of orange juice and a pair of sunglasses on a nearby table.<\/p>\n
Items believed to belong to the shooters, including two balaclavas, a shirt, and a glove, were recovered from the getaway vehicles and presented to the jury in evidence bags.<\/p>\n
