This strategy is detailed in a new document titled &#8216;Moon Base User\u2019s Guide,&#8217; which highlights both the extensive nature of the project and the significant hurdles that must be overcome to realize it.<\/p>\n<p>Released on April 6, the nine-page guide provides an overview of the technical and operational challenges NASA faces to bring its vision to fruition.<\/p>\n<p>The agency is gearing up for a surge in lunar exploration, beginning with a series of robotic and uncrewed landings. Over the next three years, NASA plans to conduct 21 landings to prepare the lunar terrain for future human operations.<\/p>\n<p>The ultimate aim is to support a $20 billion lunar base and facilitate the first crewed missions by 2028. This initiative is also part of a long-term vision that includes creating a nuclear-powered spacecraft for potential Mars missions.<\/p>\n<p>Although recent achievements, such as the successful crewed flyby of the Moon during the Artemis II mission, signify progress, NASA recognizes that numerous essential systems are still in development.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed plan is structured into three distinct phases, each with increasing complexity.<\/p>\n<p>Phase 1, which is projected to extend until 2029, will involve 25 launches and 21 landings. The primary goal is to establish reliable access to the Moon and test various systems.<\/p>\n<p>In Phase 2, slated for 2029 to 2032, NASA will conduct 27 launches and 24 landings, during which it will commence occasional crewed missions.<\/p>\n<p>Phase 3 will focus on establishing a permanent human presence on the Moon, requiring additional launches and landings, as well as the creation of cargo-return systems.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed lunar base is intended to be located near the Moon\u2019s south pole, an area that presents challenges distinct from those encountered during the Apollo missions. This site has specific difficulties related to lighting and temperature.<\/p>\n<p>In this region, the Sun will be consistently positioned low on the horizon, creating long shadows that could hinder solar power generation. Additionally, the area will experience cold spots and extended periods of darkness.<\/p>\n<p>These conditions necessitate the development of innovative energy generation systems, such as advanced solar panels or nuclear power sources.<\/p>\n<p>The guide indicates that several critical technologies are still lacking to enable the establishment of a permanent lunar base. For example, systems required for precise landings, hazard detection, and damage avoidance are not yet adequately developed. Furthermore, addressing the challenges of long-term human habitation on the Moon is crucial, as lunar dust, reduced gravity, and cosmic radiation pose significant risks.
