A tragic incident occurred at the Tolani Maritime Institute in Talegaon, Pune, where a 20-year-old cadet, Vishal Verma, lost his life due to a fatal injury sustained when a basketball hoop’s rim became detached while he was hanging from it. Following this event, local authorities have initiated legal action against four officials from the institute, including the principal, on charges of causing death through negligence.<\/p>\n
The accident unfolded at approximately 7:20 AM on April 5. Vishal Verma, originally from Ayodhya district in Uttar Pradesh, was reportedly engaged in physical exercise on the institute’s sports field. After completing a run, he approached the basketball court and grasped the rim of the hoop with the intention of hanging from it. The rim unexpectedly dislodged, resulting in a severe head injury when he fell. Verma was subsequently transported to Talegaon General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n
Initially, police filed an Accidental Death Report (ADR) as part of the standard procedure for any \u201cunnatural death,\u201d which encompasses accidents, suicides, and other suspicious circumstances. This ADR was registered at the Talegaon MIDC police station under the jurisdiction of the Pimpri Chinchwad police, prompting an investigation.<\/p>\n
An officer from the Talegaon MIDC police station stated, \u201cThe inquiry into the ADR indicated that the basketball hoop structure was significantly outdated and had rust issues. The absence of regular maintenance contributed to the tragic death of Vishal Verma. Following the inquiry findings, the deceased’s brother, Ashok Verma, has lodged a formal complaint, resulting in charges against four individuals for negligence leading to death. We have dispatched a team to the institute for further investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n
The FIR specifically names Principal Sanjeet Kanungo along with three other officials, including the maintenance officer for the grounds, the head of sports, and a management representative, who are yet to be identified. The police are actively working to confirm their identities. Additionally, charges have been filed under BNS section 106, which addresses negligent death. In the wake of the incident, numerous cadets congregated at the site, calling for a comprehensive investigation and expressing concerns over negligence.<\/p>\n
