The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Jordan have formalized agreements to initiate a railway development project aimed at enhancing connectivity between the two nations. With an estimated investment of approximately USD 2.3 billion, this initiative is designed to link critical transportation routes and further solidify the relationship between the two countries.<\/p>\n
The planned railway line will span 360 kilometers, connecting the significant mining areas of Al-Shidiya and Ghor Al-Safi to the Port of Aqaba, a key port located in the Red Sea region. This infrastructure is projected to manage around 16 million tonnes of phosphate and potash annually.<\/p>\n
Positioned strategically at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, the Port of Aqaba is vital to Jordan\u2019s economy, facilitating the majority of the nation\u2019s imports and exports, especially essential mining commodities like raw phosphate and potash.<\/p>\n
According to the agreement, a joint venture called the UAE-Jordan Railway Company will be created to manage the implementation, operation, and upkeep of Jordan’s railway system. The project will be executed by Etihad Rail, which is responsible for the UAE’s national railway network.<\/p>\n
Once completed, this railway system is expected to significantly impact Jordan’s mining industry by lowering transportation expenses for phosphate and potash. Furthermore, it will contribute to broader economic development and create numerous job opportunities across various sectors. The railway line is anticipated to be operational within approximately five years, with services expected to commence by 2030.<\/p>\n
