Recently, she recounted a significant encounter from that time, which involved Bollywood icon Salman Khan and acclaimed director Sanjay Leela Bhansali.<\/p>\n
During an interview with ANI, Kangana reflected on her initial meeting with Salman Khan when she was just starting out. \u201cI met Salman through a mutual acquaintance when I was around 16 or 17, and nothing significant had happened in my career yet. He looked at me and remarked, \u2018She is Sanjay Leela Bhansali\u2019s heroine.\u2019 He encouraged me, saying, \u2018You should go and meet Sanjay Bhansali,\u2019\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n
For Kangana, receiving such praise from Salman was incredibly validating, particularly given Bhansali’s prominence in the industry at that time. \u201cSalman said, \u2018He\u2019ll see you and sign you right away.\u2019 I expressed my gratitude, but he insisted, \u2018No, go introduce yourself. Go meet him,\u2019\u201d she shared. Filled with enthusiasm, Kangana took Salman\u2019s advice and headed to Bhansali\u2019s residence that very day, carrying her portfolio\u2014essentially a collection of photos typical of aspiring actors. \u201cHis mother was present as well. I told him, \u2018Salman sir has sent me.\u2019 He acknowledged my presence and asked, \u2018What is this?\u2019 I replied, \u2018This is my portfolio,\u2019\u201d Kangana detailed.<\/p>\n
Kangana reminisced about how Sanjay Leela Bhansali examined her photographs closely. \u201cHe scrutinized the images, studying my face, and remarked, \u2018You look different in every picture. What does your actual face look like?\u2019 He noted, \u2018If we straighten your hair, you look different. If you wear a wig, you look different,\u2019\u201d she said with a hint of humor. She playfully questioned him, \u201cIs that good or bad?\u201d to which Bhansali cryptically replied, \u201cYou\u2019ll know.\u201d However, despite their meeting, he ultimately did not offer her a role. Reflecting on the experience, Kangana noted, \u201cOf course, he didn\u2019t sign me. I believe what he meant was that if you succeed, you\u2019ll understand.\u201d<\/p>\n
Years later, Sanjay Leela Bhansali reportedly expressed regret over his choice not to cast Kangana in a film. \u201cWhenever Sanjay sir encounters me now, he reminisces about that moment and often mentions he wishes he had heeded Salman Khan\u2019s advice,\u201d Kangana disclosed. At that juncture in her career, she was eager for opportunities, but eventually, she found success with films like Tanu Weds Manu and Queen, which garnered significant box office success. Once she gained recognition, she found herself in a position of power, leading Bhansali to reach out again, this time for an item number in his film Ram Leela.<\/p>\n
However, Kangana declined the offer. \u201cAt that time, I was the highest-grossing actress, following the successes of Tanu Weds Manu and Queen. He proposed a song in Ram Leela, saying, \u2018You should do this song,\u2019 but I responded, \u2018Sir, I don\u2019t want to do item numbers,\u2019 which he appeared to take poorly,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n
In a previous discussion with NBT, Kangana candidly articulated her rationale for refusing the opportunity: \u201cEven Sanjay Leela Bhansali approached me for an item number in Ram Leela. Many people thought I was foolish for turning him down. But I can\u2019t do it. Whether it\u2019s Bhansali or anyone else, I just can\u2019t. How can you portray women like this?\u201d<\/p>\n
