He expresses concern that a prolonged conflict in the Middle East could exacerbate fuel and food shortages, possibly leading to restrictions reminiscent of pandemic lockdowns. “What happens if we wake up tomorrow with no oil or fuel?” Gurung questions. “What if the government decides to implement lockdown measures again?”<\/p>\n
Gurung notes that the supply of lamb has already dwindled, resulting in increased prices. Additionally, suppliers are imposing fuel surcharges on retailers, some exceeding $10 per delivery. “Retail sales have definitely dipped by at least 5 to 10 percent,” he remarks. “It’s challenging for us as we interact directly with customers, many of whom are voicing their frustrations about the travel costs to reach us.”<\/p>\n
Gurung’s worries are indicative of a larger unease permeating the economy. The escalating oil prices have led to rising costs at the pump, triggering fears that both Australia and the global economy may be on the verge of recession.<\/p>\n
Economist Nicholas Gruen warns that the economic fallout could be more severe than current expert predictions. He estimates the likelihood of a recession has surged well beyond typical probabilities, now possibly exceeding 40 to 60 percent. “This oil price surge, fueled by the conflict, poses a significant challenge for the Australian economy,” he states. “This is occurring concurrently with the Reserve Bank’s decision to raise interest rates in response to inflation driven by the COVID-19 pandemic.”<\/p>\n
At Helen Zhao’s hair salon in Melbourne, business has already started to decline as fewer customers are willing to make the trip for a haircut. “Some clients are traveling from far away and are trying to save money, which is why they are choosing not to come,” she explains.<\/p>\n
Consumer Aisha, who frequents a caf\u00e9 in Preston, shares that her household is already adjusting its budget. “We’re cutting back on spending across the board,” she reveals. “Sometimes we skip meals and avoid buying meat. Life is becoming increasingly challenging; we simply can’t afford everything anymore. Our bills, rent, and car expenses are all rising.”<\/p>\n
Another customer, Marty Stankovski, echoes these sentiments, indicating that financial pressures are forcing many to make sacrifices. “With mortgages and other expenses, we find ourselves in a situation where we have to choose between essentials,” he states. “Finding well-paying jobs is increasingly difficult, and entertainment options like dining out have been replaced by staying in.”<\/p>\n
The International Monetary Fund has indicated that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has cast a shadow over economic forecasts. In a “severe scenario,” where energy supply disruptions extend into the following year and oil prices average $110 per barrel this year and $125 next year, economic growth could slow to around 2 percent in 2026 and 2.2 percent in 2027, with inflation rates surpassing 6 percent.<\/p>\n
Gruen expresses concern that the Australian economy may soon reach what he describes as the “Churchill point,” referencing a historical moment when British Chancellor Winston Churchill sought to revert the UK to the gold standard post-World War I, a move that proved economically detrimental. Gruen warns that central banks may repeat similar mistakes in response to the current price shocks stemming from the conflict.<\/p>\n
The Reserve Bank’s “nightmare” scenario involves stagflation, a condition characterized by high inflation coupled with stagnant economic growth. Some economists are predicting that the Reserve Bank may raise interest rates three more times this year due to inflationary pressures. However, managing such a scenario becomes increasingly complex.<\/p>\n
Stagflation is defined as a recession occurring alongside high inflation, a situation that Betsey Stevenson, a public policy and economics professor at the University of Michigan, describes as a heightened risk that Australia has not seen in her adult life. She acknowledges that while the current oil price shocks differ from those of the 1970s due to improved central bank management, the risk of stagflation remains significant.<\/p>\n
