Have you noticed an increasing presence of fungi in your surroundings lately? You’re not alone in this observation. Ecologist and environmental photographer Alison Pouliot highlights a notable surge in public interest regarding fungi and foraging activities.<\/p>\n
“We are currently experiencing what I refer to as a ‘mushroom moment’ or a ‘fungal awakening,'” Pouliot states, as her work is showcased in an exhibition at the National Centre for Environmental Art at WAMA, located in the scenic Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, Victoria.<\/p>\n
Having been captivated by fungi since her youth, Pouliot attributes this heightened interest to a growing skepticism towards the influence of large supermarkets and industrial farming practices, leading more people to explore foraging. Additionally, she notes the unique and often bizarre appearances of mushrooms, which are distinct from both plants and animals.<\/p>\n Fungi represents a microcosm of life. The central Victorian photographer frequently travels to the Northern Hemisphere each autumn for a “double dose of fungi” and is part of a collaborative group of artists featured in the exhibition entitled “Entanglements with Fungi: Life, Death and Renewal” at WAMA, which opened its doors in July 2025 as a non-profit center.<\/p>\n This immersive exhibition emphasizes the cycles of life, death, and rejuvenation inherent in the hidden world of fungi. Visitors can experience various elements, including digital projections of forest floors, sound installations derived from tree root and soil recordings, digital collages, and an extensive artist’s book measuring eight meters in length.<\/p>\n “The goal is not merely to present aesthetically pleasing images of fungi but to encourage broader contemplation on the essential role fungi play in our lives and how we perceive them,” curator Felicity Spear remarks.<\/p>\n Dr. Spear emphasizes that fungi are fundamental to life on our planet. Although the exhibition does not overtly engage in political discourse, it conveys a message regarding environmental stewardship. “We aim for attendees to reflect on human civilization and its environmental impact,” she adds.<\/p>\n Dr. Spear’s contributions include photographs from Tasmania’s Overland Track, alongside works from sound artist Vicki Hallett, spore prints by UK environmental artist Chris Drury, and Sam Leach, who gained recognition with his 2010 Archibald Prize-winning portrait of comedian and musician Tim Minchin. Additionally, Chris Henschke’s piece, Mycocube\u00b3, consists of transparent cubes each cultivating fungi or mycelium at varying stages.<\/p>\n Yet, the striking impact of Alison Pouliot’s photographs, which adorn entire walls, is difficult to surpass. While she possesses a general fascination with nature, she finds fungi particularly captivating due to their transient nature. “You witness a mushroom or another sporing body emerge, showcasing a range of beautiful yet often quirky forms, only for them to vanish shortly after,” Pouliot observes. Some mushrooms exist for mere hours, and their delicate structure makes them incredibly fragile. “A gentle breath can cause them to wither away,” she adds.<\/p>\n Having traveled globally and experienced diverse interpretations of fungi, Pouliot expresses her amazement at the WAMA exhibition, which offers fresh perspectives on her beloved subject. Crafting an image is crucial; a significant aspect of capturing an exceptional photo lies in determining the narrative you wish to convey. For instance, a photo might highlight a mushroom’s visual appeal or its identifying characteristics if intended for a field guide.<\/p>\n “Is the focus on beauty? Is it a potentially endangered species, or perhaps a toxic variety that requires caution?” she reflects. Equally vital to the process is the willingness to embrace the occasional leech encounter while exploring the forest, as she continues her daily excursions.<\/p>\n From pharmaceuticals to construction materials and innovative textiles, fungi permeate various facets of our lives. “However, I believe this exhibition transcends that scope.
