In some regions, these plants are classified as weeds.

According to Carol Booth, policy director at the Invasive Species Council, these plants not only proliferate in gardens but also represent a major environmental challenge that many gardeners may not fully comprehend. “Australia faces a significant weed crisis, with estimates suggesting that around 75% of weed issues stem from plants that have escaped from gardens,” she stated.

Dr. Booth elaborated that these escaped garden plants invade natural bushland and riparian habitats, outcompeting native flora and disrupting wildlife habitats.

To cultivate a sustainable garden that minimizes future complications, horticulture specialists offer several guidelines.

A key obstacle in curtailing the spread of invasive species in Australia is the absence of comprehensive national regulations governing the nursery industry. “It’s rather surprising that the government relies on amateur gardeners to research and make informed decisions about their plant selections,” Booth remarked.

The Australian government has designated 32 weeds of national significance that are generally banned from sale, distribution, or cultivation. However, numerous other invasive species are not regulated, varying by locality.

Marg Allan, a horticulturalist at the Victorian Indigenous Nurseries Co-op (VINC) in Melbourne, noted that many invasive plants are chosen for their resilience, drought resistance, and rapid growth. “Agapanthus is a particularly problematic species,” she explained, highlighting its tendency to escape gardens, especially in wetter areas like Mornington Peninsula.

Allan advises gardeners to consult their local council’s weed list, participate in Gardens for Wildlife programs, and engage with nursery staff for guidance.

Nick Nosek, a horticulturist at VINC, emphasizes the importance of home gardeners in fostering local wildlife and insect populations. “It’s a wonderful chance for individuals to engage with nature and understand their local environment,” he stated.

Resources such as databases and state-run initiatives like Gardening Responsibly can be useful for gardeners seeking alternatives to invasive species.

Here are some recommended substitutions for commonly known invasive plants:

For blue flax lilies (Dianella species), consider planting snapdragons, delphiniums, or white correa.

Replace morning glory or English ivy with purple coral pea, wonga vine, or native clematis species.

Instead of mother-in-law’s tongue, opt for Lomandra or flax lily species.

Invasive plants not only threaten Australia’s unique ecosystems but can also damage personal gardens. “Their aggressive root systems can infiltrate sewer lines or undermine foundations; for example, bamboo is notorious for this,” Dr. Booth warned.

Dr. Jela Ivankovic-Waters, a lecturer in urban horticulture at the University of Melbourne, explained that invasive plants often outcompete native species for essential resources such as water, light, and nutrients, sometimes leading to the extinction of local flora. She noted how climbing plants can rapidly spread by using tendrils to attach themselves to other plants or structures.

“Morning glory, for instance, can block light and smother other plants beneath it,” she said, reinforcing the notion that planting native species should be viewed not merely as an alternative but as the ideal choice.

Establishing a garden with native and indigenous plants can significantly benefit local wildlife and the broader ecosystem while also being cost-effective. Many native species require less water and often do not need fertilizers or pesticides, thereby reducing overall gardening expenses.

Fiona Cross, a horticulturist at Nillumbik Shire’s Edendale nursery, highlighted the distinction between native and indigenous plants. Native plants may originate from anywhere in Australia, while indigenous plants are native to a specific local area. “We cultivate species that are naturally occurring in the Nillumbik region, making them better suited to the environment and less likely to become invasive,” she explained. Indigenous plants are well-adapted to local soil and climate and help support wildlife corridors.

“A diverse selection of indigenous plants can attract a variety of insects, reptiles, and animals to your garden,” she added. Allan noted that whether gardening in pots on a balcony or in a backyard, there are numerous indigenous species that can positively impact the ecosystem. Golden everlasting daisies, for instance, are visually appealing and attract pollinators.

A representative from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water acknowledged the significant threat invasive plants pose to Australia’s native biodiversity. The government is currently working on a threat abatement plan in collaboration with state and territory authorities to establish a national strategy aimed at mitigating the effects of these invasive species on native flora and fauna.

The vibrant flowers of agapanthus, morning glory, gazania, and foxglove can enhance the beauty of your garden; however, they also pose significant risks as they can quickly become problematic.
