Since Sunday, Abdul Salam Chopan has been visiting the banks of a local stream in Ramban, located in the Jammu region, anxiously awaiting news about his son, Tanveer Ahmad. As time passes and the river\u2019s swift currents persist, the likelihood of finding the 18-year-old alive diminishes, a reality that weighs heavily on the 40-year-old father, who serves as a Special Police Officer with the Jammu and Kashmir Police. Chopan clings to the hope that his son’s body might eventually surface.<\/p>\n
Tanveer, who lived in Mundkhal Pogal within Ukhral tehsil, was transporting two bovine animals and two calves in a pickup truck on his way home from Jammu when he was pursued by a group of self-identified cow vigilantes in two vehicles around Sunday afternoon. The incident occurred near Digdole on the Jammu-Srinagar highway.<\/p>\n
Witnesses reported to the police that the vigilantes managed to corner Tanveer near Maggarkote and began to physically assault him. In an attempt to escape, he fled down the road and allegedly jumped into the nullah adjacent to the highway, where he has not been seen since.<\/p>\n
Sub-Divisional Police Officer Surinder Singh Biloria, who leads the Special Investigation Team (SIT) assigned to this case, stated that Tanveer had obtained the necessary permissions from the District Magistrate of Jammu to transport the cattle, which he intended to keep as milch animals.<\/p>\n
As news of Tanveer\u2019s disappearance spread, a large group of residents from Pogal and surrounding villages congregated at Maggarkote, blocking the national highway in protest and demanding accountability. In connection with the incident, authorities have arrested four individuals known for their involvement in cow vigilantism within the area.<\/p>\n
The police have also taken custody of the cattle and the pickup truck involved in the incident.<\/p>\n
Chopan shared that Tanveer had been working as a driver at a factory in Jammu and was returning home after nearly a month. \u201cHe called me around 6 am on Sunday before leaving Jammu, and I told him I would stay home since he was on his way,\u201d Chopan recounted. Instead of hearing from Tanveer, he received a call from a senior police officer requesting him to come to Ramsu. \u201cWhen I learned what had occurred, it felt as if the ground had fallen away beneath me,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Two years ago, after completing his Class 10 education, Tanveer began working in Jammu to support his family. Chopan, who serves as a Special Police Officer at Banihal Railway Station and earns Rs 18,000 monthly, has four daughters, one of whom is married.<\/p>\n
Upon receiving notification of the incident, police promptly arrived at the scene and initiated a rescue operation. However, the extensive search efforts, involving the State Disaster Response Force and the National Disaster Response Force, have yielded no results over the last four days. Authorities attribute this lack of progress to the strong currents and depth of the stream, which complicate rescue operations.<\/p>\n
The four individuals arrested by the SIT\u2014Surjeet Singh, Sandeep Singh, Digvijay Singh, and Kewal Singh\u2014are all residents of Ramban. Their backgrounds include a village lamberdar, a cloth merchant, and an employee of a transport company. A police official, who requested anonymity, indicated that these individuals are known for their history of cow vigilantism and have previously targeted Muslim cattle transporters. \u201cOnce the search for Tanveer\u2019s body concludes, we will investigate any prior incidents involving them,\u201d the officer remarked.<\/p>\n
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has characterized the situation as a \u201cmurder\u201d and emphasized that \u201cjungle raj\u201d will not be tolerated in Jammu and Kashmir. He asserted that attempts to exploit religion to disrupt peace in the Union Territory will not be permitted. Abdullah has called on Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, responsible for law and order, to ensure that those involved face consequences.<\/p>\n
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has expressed concern that Tanveer’s case highlights the emerging threat of cow vigilantism in Jammu and Kashmir, warning of potential \u201crepercussions\u201d if the accused are not held accountable. Local BJP MLA Arjun Singh Raju has also condemned the incident, promising that stringent actions will be taken against the perpetrators.<\/p>\n
