Describing the decision as \u201chistoric,\u201d Chief Minister Conrad Sangma revealed that the Meghalaya Official Languages Ordinance, 2026 has been ratified by the state cabinet. This decision arises from a persistent demand for the recognition of Khasi and Garo, the primary languages of the two largest tribal communities in the state, within the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Presently, all official communications in Meghalaya are conducted in English.<\/p>\n The Chief Minister also noted that detailed regulations will be delineated regarding the specific contexts in which each language will be utilized, while English will remain the \u201ccommon thread\u201d in official communications.
