On a sunny afternoon, Ng\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ikalei Loito was enjoying a swim in Lake Turkana with her sisters-in-law when she was suddenly attacked by a crocodile, which clamped down on her legs with immense force. In severe pain, she managed to grab hold of a nearby tree partially submerged in the water and called out for help as the crocodile attempted to pull her underwater.<\/p>\n
As fear gripped her, thoughts of her five children flooded her mind. She feared for their future should she not survive the ordeal. “When a crocodile strikes, it feels as though death is imminent,” she recalled.<\/p>\n
Local villagers rushed into the water to assist her, and eventually, the crocodile released its grip. However, Loito’s legs were left severely injured and bleeding. She was transported to the nearest hospital, a three-hour journey away, in a police vehicle.<\/p>\n
This incident, which occurred in December 2024 in Lowarengak town near the Ethiopian border, highlights a troubling trend in the region. Crocodile attacks have surged in frequency along Lake Turkana in northwestern Kenya, primarily due to elevated water levels that have pushed crocodiles closer to human populations. These formidable predators can reach lengths of up to six meters (20 feet) and weigh as much as 900 kilograms (2,000 pounds).<\/p>\n
At the hospital, doctors stabilized Loito’s injuries by applying a cast to one leg and using an external fixator on the other. However, by the following day, both legs showed signs of severe damage, prompting the medical team to make the difficult decision to amputate.<\/p>\n
Reflecting on her ordeal, the 33-year-old Loito shared her story from her home in Kalokol town, where she now relies on the support of her mother and relatives for survival. Previously, she had supported her family by cooking and selling mandazi, a type of fried dough. “My life has completely changed. I can no longer do anything,” she lamented.<\/p>\n
Lake Turkana, the largest permanent desert lake in the world, is one of eight major lakes in Kenya’s Rift Valley, a geological formation that stretches over 4,000 miles (6,500 kilometers) from Lebanon to Mozambique. A government report from 2021 noted that the lake’s surface area had expanded by approximately 10% over the previous decade.<\/p>\n
The lake is crucial for many local residents who depend on it for fishing, both for personal consumption and commercial sale. However, rising water levels in the Rift Valley lakes have displaced tens of thousands, inundating homes, schools, farms, and infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Researchers attribute the increasing water levels to several factors, with the 2021 report indicating that heightened rainfall linked to climate change is a primary cause. Tectonic activity in the Rift Valley has also been implicated. Furthermore, a United Nations environmental report suggested that flooding in Lake Turkana could become more frequent in the next 20 years as a result of climate change.<\/p>\n
Elijah Chege, a county warden with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), noted that the rising water levels have led to crocodiles encroaching on human habitats, establishing new nesting and hunting grounds along the modified shorelines. This shift has significantly raised the risk of crocodile attacks on residents.<\/p>\n
Chege explained that traditional fishing methods, such as using logs for boats, further expose communities to the danger of crocodile encounters. To combat this issue, KWS conducts educational campaigns to inform residents about high-risk areas and crocodile behavior, while also enlisting local scouts to monitor crocodile movements.<\/p>\n Achiro Kephas, an emergency coordinator at the Turkana county health ministry, noted that most victims are fishermen, and many incidents go unreported, resulting in permanent disabilities for survivors. The stories of crocodile attacks resonate throughout communities near the lake.<\/p>\n Across from Loito’s residence, Ng\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ispaan Long\u00e2\u20ac\u2122olan sat selling water and charcoal while using crutches. He recounted how he lost his left leg to a crocodile attack in Natirae village shortly after the birth of his youngest child in 2018. While untangling a fishing net in the lake, he was bitten, and in a desperate struggle, he poked the crocodile in the eyes to escape its grip. However, his left leg was severely injured and trapped in the net.<\/p>\n Despite the assistance of nearby fishermen, they could not free his leg, leading him to instruct them to amputate it using a traditional Turkana wrist knife. “I was in excruciating pain, and my leg was completely damaged,” he recalled.<\/p>\n Now 44 years old, Long\u00e2\u20ac\u2122olan has a metal rod in his right leg and has lost feeling in the fingers he used to fend off the crocodile.
