Conflicts and crises are significantly impacting our economies, security, and overall emotional health, with repercussions felt in our everyday lives. The reliability of supply chains is diminishing, energy costs are escalating, and reliance on fossil fuels and essential minerals presents national security challenges. Tariffs, excess industrial capacity, and export limitations jeopardize employment and economic stability, revealing Europe’s inherent weaknesses and vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, we have demonstrated that bolstering our alliances and enhancing our economic and military capabilities can expand our operational reach. For example, presenting a unified European political stance has been instrumental in protecting Greenland’s sovereignty. Despite recent upheavals, Europe continues to be one of the most desirable regions globally for living and working.<\/p>\n
It is our responsibility to ensure Europe’s strength. The power lies with us, not with external powers such as the White House, the Great Hall of the People, or the Kremlin. I envision a strong Germany and Europe, including the UK as a vital ally, so that we are not susceptible to coercion. The answer lies in increasing our sovereignty, which should not be confused with nationalism.<\/p>\n
Sovereignty is essential for political influence and economic resilience. However, we can only bolster our sovereignty collectively as Europeans. A robust and sovereign Europe is capable of safeguarding its citizens from threats, whether they originate internally or externally.<\/p>\n
The German government is currently pursuing a reform agenda focused not on austerity but on enhancing sovereignty. To protect and strengthen our European capabilities, we must implement reforms within Germany.<\/p>\n
Prioritizing economic and military sovereignty, we have established a \u20ac500 billion investment fund aimed at modernizing infrastructure and investing in quality public services. We have also made adjustments to Germany’s debt limitations to facilitate military modernization and increased engagement with NATO.<\/p>\n
However, as Europeans, we are not fully realizing our potential. While we excel in research and development, many European start-ups relocate to the United States due to a lack of available capital for expansion. Therefore, I advocate for the advancement of a unified European capital markets union.<\/p>\n
Germany’s collective bargaining system, which connects unions, employers, and the state within a \u201csocial contract,\u201d serves as a strategic asset during times of crisis and reform. We bear significant responsibility in the coming months as we update our business models and refresh our social contracts. To ensure this effort yields results, we plan to introduce tax reforms that would increase incomes for 95% of the population while asking the wealthiest to contribute a bit more.<\/p>\n
With a part-time employment rate nearing 40%, one of the highest in Europe, and nearly half of women working part-time, our next priority is to eliminate structural barriers in the labor market. Certain existing tax and social measures, like income-splitting for married couples, create disincentives. For families with two children, there is little financial difference between earning \u20ac3,000 or \u20ac4,500 monthly, as their total gross income remains largely unaffected due to benefit withdrawal rates.<\/p>\n
Alongside structural reforms, we are investing in childcare facilities and expanding the availability of all-day schooling to ease the burden on families.<\/p>\n
We will also advance an affordability agenda aimed at reducing energy, transportation, and housing costs, while enhancing childcare and educational services.<\/p>\n
The ongoing conflict in Iran underscores the necessity of maintaining a firm commitment to decarbonizing our economies. We require greater investment in wind and solar energy, expansion of electricity storage capabilities, and modernization of our power grids. Attempts to hinder the energy transition or revive nuclear energy pose a threat to Germany’s sovereignty.<\/p>\n
Europe must mature and demonstrate its commitment to trade and cooperation. Recent EU trade agreements with Australia, the Mercosur countries, and India highlight our strength. However, if others disregard the rules, we must not be na\u00efve. To guard against unfair competition, Europe should adopt local content requirements and \u201cbuy European\u201d policies in critical sectors. We should significantly strengthen our investment protection laws to ensure that foreign acquisitions contribute economic and technological value within the EU.<\/p>\n
Public officials must lead the way, but the business sector must also commit to Europe. I encourage managers to prioritize their local communities and employees over short-term profit gains.<\/p>\n
The pursuit of domestic reforms and the establishment of international alliances are interconnected goals. They represent a shared commitment to the belief that democratic societies, when candid about their challenges and courageous in their willingness to change, can dictate their own futures. Consider the case of Hungary.<\/p>\n
On April 17 and 18, progressive leaders worldwide will convene in Barcelona to collectively embrace this vision, as leaders determined to reclaim our future from nationalist movements and unaccountable markets.<\/p>\n
The reforms I have proposed reflect Germany’s contribution to this broader initiative to make 2026 a transformative year. Certainly, Germany’s actions alone will not resolve all issues, but a reformed and empowered Germany is vital for a resilient Europe.<\/p>\n
Our response to uncertainty lies in our own strength, which guarantees our freedom. In essence, strength equates to freedom. Sovereignty is not about erecting barriers; it is about possessing the fortitude to keep them down.<\/p>\n
