In a related development, Charan Das Mahant, the leader of the Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha and a member of Congress, has called for charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against Vedanta Group officials. During a press briefing, Mahant asserted the need for a judicial inquiry, emphasizing that the injured should receive treatment at specialized burn units in cities such as Mumbai or Coimbatore. He also called for the establishment of a modern burn hospital in Chhattisgarh.<\/p>\n
Deepak Baij, the Pradesh Congress Committee in-charge, referenced statistics presented in the Vidhan Sabha, revealing that nearly 300 workers have lost their lives in industrial accidents over the past three years in Chhattisgarh, with an additional 248 workers sustaining injuries.<\/p>\n
On Thursday evening, another worker, Kismat Barkat Ali, succumbed to his injuries at Kalda hospital. Ali, who resided in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh, was one of four workers admitted to the hospital early Wednesday morning, two of whom were declared dead upon arrival. Another worker, Upendra Sah from Garhwa, Jharkhand, is currently on ventilator support due to severe burns covering over 90 percent of his body.<\/p>\n
The explosion occurred around 2:30 PM on Tuesday in Boiler-01 of the Vedanta power plant. A preliminary technical report from the Chief Inspector of Boilers indicated that an excessive buildup of fuel inside the furnace created dangerous pressure, leading to the explosion. This pressure caused a lower pipe of the boiler to displace, resulting in the tragic incident. A report from the Forensic Science Laboratory in Sakti corroborated that fuel accumulation and the resulting pressure were the primary factors behind the explosion.<\/p>\n
As part of the investigation, it was discovered that Vedanta and its subsidiary NGSL failed to adhere to proper maintenance and operational standards for their machinery and equipment. This negligence resulted in fluctuations in the boiler’s pressure, ultimately causing the explosion. An official statement noted that clear negligence was evident based on the available evidence and technical reports.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed under various sections related to negligence resulting in death against several individuals, including Vedanta Company Director Anil Agarwal and Company Manager Devendra Patel, along with other responsible personnel.<\/p>\n
In response to the incident, Vedanta Limited’s Chhattisgarh Thermal Power Plant released a statement declaring that their immediate focus is on providing optimal medical care for the affected individuals. They expressed their commitment to fully supporting the injured and coordinating closely with medical teams and local authorities.
