A magnitude-5.5 earthquake struck early Sunday in the vicinity of the border between South Australia and the Northern Territory, according to reports from Geoscience Australia.<\/p>\n
Senior seismologist Jonathan Bathgate compared this tremor to the catastrophic Newcastle earthquake of 1989. He noted that the region is likely to experience “smaller” aftershocks throughout the day.<\/p>\n
Residents of a remote community in the APY Lands experienced the effects of the earthquake, which resulted in rattling shelves and swaying light fixtures. The quake was recorded at 3:56 AM at Amata, previously known as Musgrave Park.<\/p>\n
Bathgate indicated that Geoscience Australia had received approximately 30 reports from individuals who felt the earthquake. “It startled many people in Yulara and the surrounding areas, resulting in light to moderate shaking,” he shared during an interview with 891 ABC Adelaide. “Some light fixtures swung from their brackets and various items rattled off shelves, making for an unexpected early morning disturbance for quite a few residents.”<\/p>\n
Social media users from Yulara, Uluru, and Mutitjulu also reported being awakened by the seismic activity.<\/p>\n
Bathgate emphasized that the earthquake’s magnitude was similar to the 1989 disaster, which caused numerous casualties and inflicted around $4 billion in damages. “The magnitude is comparable; however, this event occurred in a largely uninhabited region, reducing the immediate risk to populated areas,” he explained.<\/p>\n
Following the main quake, several aftershocks between magnitudes 2.8 and 3.6 were recorded after 9 AM, though few people likely felt them unless they were in close proximity to the epicenter. “Typically, aftershocks diminish in frequency and intensity over time, but it is still possible for larger quakes to occur within that sequence, making predictions challenging,” he noted.<\/p>\n
Bathgate remarked on the area’s seismic activity history, stating it is prone to significant earthquakes. He recalled a magnitude-5.4 quake in Ernabella (Pukatja) in 2012, which was the largest inland earthquake in 15 years at that time.
