However, Jenny, a 32-year-old Briton, like many others, has recently been reluctant to engage in this activity. “I probably wouldn’t have even shared my wedding,” she admits. “But it felt necessary because of unwritten rules. Friends kept urging me to post since it had been a week.”

This hesitation is not unique to Jenny. Recent findings from the UK’s communications regulator, Ofcom, reveal a decline in social media activity among adults in the UK. According to their report, only 49% of adult users are currently posting, sharing, or commenting, a significant drop from 61% in 2024.

So, is the UK moving away from social media?

Several reasons contribute to this decline. Among them are the growing trend of passive content consumption, concerns over the revival of regrettable past posts, and increasing awareness of mental health issues related to excessive screen time. At the very least, Ofcom’s findings indicate that the British public is reflecting on the myriad issues surrounding this influential medium.

A key factor in these findings is the evolving nature of social media itself. The emergence of platforms like TikTok and the popularity of video features, such as Instagram Reels, have shifted user behavior toward more passive consumption, in contrast to the more interactive nature of older platforms like Facebook. “Much of this change can be attributed to the transformation of social media platforms,” explains Joseph Oxlade, a senior research manager at Ofcom. “It has become increasingly challenging for individuals to engage actively.”

The UK is home to TikTok’s largest user base in Europe, with over 30 million users. Furthermore, Meta, the owner of Instagram, announced in January that viewership of Reels had surged by 30% in the US compared to the previous year, and Facebook video views were also experiencing significant growth.

Alongside the shift in social media engagement, past usage is also a concern. Ofcom’s annual survey highlights that apprehension about old posts resurfacing is influencing current posting behavior. “People are increasingly worried that their online activity may have repercussions later in life,” notes Oxlade.

The consequences of past social media activity are significant and can affect various individuals, regardless of their background. For instance, actress Karla Sofía Gascón faced backlash when her old tweets about Islam and George Floyd resurfaced, impacting her Oscar nomination. Similarly, James Gunn, director of Guardians of the Galaxy, was dismissed by Disney over past tweets that trivialized serious issues before eventually being reinstated.

Other incidents, such as English footballer Declan Rice’s controversial post from 2015 expressing support for the IRA, also demonstrate how quickly public perception can shift, although he later clarified his stance. In the political arena, the resurfacing of problematic tweets has led to resignations and apologies, such as that of Catherine Almonte Da Costa in New York and UK Labour MP Lauren Edwards.

Against this backdrop, Ofcom’s report indicates a rise in the number of adults worried about past online statements potentially causing future problems, increasing from 43% in 2024 to 49% now.

Oxlade suggests that this anxiety may be connected to the growing polarization in online discourse. The Ofcom survey found that over a quarter of adults encounter viewpoints they strongly disagree with online. “This could deter individuals from sharing their opinions, out of fear that they might be labeled as controversial later,” he adds.

Data from the Ofcom report also point to concerns regarding the mental health ramifications of social media usage and excessive screen time. The percentage of adults who believe the advantages of being online surpass the risks has dropped to 59%, down from 72% in 2024. Additionally, only 36% of users feel that these platforms contribute positively to their mental health, a decrease from 42%, with 40% acknowledging that they spend too much time on their devices “most days.”

Approximately one-third of adults report having deleted an app due to excessive usage or negative mental health effects, an increase from one-quarter in 2025. Younger users are particularly inclined to remove apps for these reasons, according to Ofcom.

The survey included a panel of 20 individuals, whose names were altered for privacy, who shared their media habits with the watchdog annually, including Jenny. Another panelist, Robert, 29, reflects on the omnipresence of screens in daily life, a sentiment likely shared by many of his generation. “Everything I read, work on, or play is on a screen. Watching content also requires a screen, so it all compounds,” he explains. “You become aware of it, but escaping it is challenging.”

The ongoing discourse about social media’s impact on mental well-being and the pervasive nature of screens is difficult to ignore, as reflected in the survey findings. Andy Burrows, CEO of the Molly Rose Foundation, a charity formed after the tragic death of teenager Molly Russell, emphasizes the need to address the mental health issues highlighted by the data.

Sharing significant life events, such as birthdays, weddings, and job promotions, has become a common practice on social media.
