The West Bengal branch of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lodged a formal complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) on Sunday, calling for immediate action against Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Kalyan Banerjee for allegedly making “derogatory, provocative, and incendiary” remarks aimed at Union Home Minister Amit Shah.<\/p>\n
The BJP contended that Banerjee\u2019s comments represent a serious breach of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which is enforced in the lead-up to the West Bengal Assembly elections. The complaint was accompanied by a video clip purportedly showing the TMC leader making the disputed statements during a public speech.<\/p>\n
In their correspondence to the CEO, a copy of which was obtained by The Indian Express, the BJP asserted that these remarks are part of a “coordinated effort” by TMC officials to incite hostility, fear, and societal divisions.<\/p>\n
The letter emphasized that the statements were deliberately crafted to belittle, provoke, and incite animosity, thereby escalating tensions and polarization within the electoral context. It further noted that this incident is not isolated but rather part of a growing trend of provocative and intimidating rhetoric from TMC leaders and their affiliates.<\/p>\n
The BJP’s correspondence claimed that Banerjee’s statements were issued under the direction and implied approval of the TMC leadership, showcasing a systemic disregard for the MCC.<\/p>\n
The BJP has called on the Election Commission to hold Banerjee accountable for violating the MCC, to mandate the prompt removal of the video from all public platforms, to issue a strict restraining order against Banerjee and other TMC officials to curb further incendiary speeches, and to initiate appropriate legal actions in accordance with relevant laws.<\/p>\n
This escalation in rhetoric occurs as West Bengal gears up for a critical election. The Election Commission of India announced on March 15 that the state will conduct voting in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with results expected to be announced on May 4.<\/p>\n
