The Pod Taxi initiative in Mumbai is poised to revolutionize urban transportation by significantly reducing travel durations and alleviating traffic congestion. Spearheaded by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), this innovative project aims to enhance last-mile connectivity within the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC).<\/p>\n
MMRDA has indicated that the BKC Pod Taxi system will cater to the daily commuting needs of approximately 400,000 to 600,000 individuals who travel to and from this bustling business hub. With the anticipated influx of visitors stemming from forthcoming infrastructure projects, such as the bullet train corridor, the demand for efficient last-mile transportation solutions has become increasingly urgent.<\/p>\n
In this context, a fully autonomous Pod Taxi network is ideally designed to traverse the narrow routes that connect BKC with the Bandra and Kurla suburban railway stations.<\/p>\n
\u201cGiven the expected rise in visitor numbers due to significant infrastructure developments, including the bullet train and new commercial establishments, the need for effective last-mile connectivity is critical. The Pod Taxi system, which operates autonomously with a frequency of every 15 to 30 seconds, is perfectly suited for the narrow roads linking BKC to Bandra and Kurla stations,\u201d MMRDA stated.<\/p>\n
The proposed Pod Taxi network will span 8.80 kilometers and include 38 stations. Each pod will have dimensions of 3.5 meters in length, 1.47 meters in width, and 1.8 meters in height, enabling it to reach speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour while accommodating six passengers at a time.<\/p>\n
During its 156th Authority Meeting on March 6, 2024, MMRDA approved the Pod Taxi project with an estimated budget of \u20b91,017 crore, which will be realized through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.<\/p>\n
On September 3, 2024, MMRDA announced that a detailed Techno-Economic Feasibility Study (TEFS) proposed a fare structure of \u20b921 per kilometer for the Pod Taxi service, with an annual increment of 4% to address inflation and operational expenses. However, the final fare will be confirmed during the project’s preliminary phase.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fare for the Pod Taxi system has been carefully determined based on stated preference surveys conducted among current auto and bus users. Currently, commuters pay an average of \u20b915.33 per kilometer for metered auto rides, and between \u20b930 to \u20b940 for shared auto trips from Bandra or Kurla to BKC. Taxi users incur a cost of \u20b918.67 per kilometer, while ride-hailing services like Ola and Uber often charge dynamic rates ranging from \u20b980 to \u20b9100 for short journeys of 2-3 kilometers to BKC. Surveys indicated that around 70% of auto users and 36% of bus users would be willing to pay \u20b921 per kilometer for the Pod Taxi service,\u201d the report stated.<\/p>\n
