From the tumultuous journey of the raft in his Booker Prize-winning novel, “Life of Pi,” to the Dante-influenced “Beatrice and Virgil,” and the transformative narrative of “The High Mountains of Portugal,” Martel showcases a richly imaginative spirit that transcends boundaries.<\/p>\n
His latest endeavor, “Son of Nobody,” presents a unique take on the Trojan War through the eyes of an unnamed soldier named Psoas. This narrative is uncovered by Harlow Donne, an enthusiastic researcher in modern-day Oxford, who examines the poem in its entirety. Harlow\u2019s own story, which includes the unraveling of his marriage and his bond with his young daughter, Helen, is woven into the text through footnotes that range from scholarly commentary to lighthearted domestic anecdotes.<\/p>\n
The inspiration for this work stemmed from Martel’s encounter with Homer\u2019s “Iliad,” translated by Stephen Mitchell, a book his wife encouraged him to read. Coming to it in his fifties, Martel expected it to be a tedious classic but was instead captivated by its compelling narrative and profound meditation on existence.<\/p>\n
He notes, \u201cI was struck by the fact that the “Iliad” largely focuses on the lives of the wealthy. It depicts figures like Bill Gates and Jeffrey Epstein, who quarrel over trivial matters while the voices of ordinary people remain unheard. What about the common soldier? What do they think? What about those stuck in the trenches?\u201d He highlights the theme of wrath in the poem, characterizing it as essentially a narrative about the challenges of managing anger.<\/p>\n
Martel envisioned presenting the story from a different viewpoint, stating, \u201cThat\u2019s why I chose Psoas as a commoner; I have little empathy for the elites, and I found the process enjoyable.\u201d While crafting the poem, he embraced the constraints of rhythm and meter, aiming for a balance between simplicity and complexity: \u201cI sought a middle ground between minimalism and maximalism.\u201d<\/p>\n
Although Martel draws inspiration from ancient literature, he doesn\u2019t view it as an escape from contemporary issues. Instead, he believes it helps place current events within a broader historical framework. \u201cWe are currently living in a world influenced by figures like Trump, Putin, and others, which is disheartening. Yet, I experience this reality daily as a citizen. I don\u2019t seek fiction that mirrors today\u2019s events; I\u2019m uninterested in Trump parodies because they are already evident. I prefer exploring older works, as they provide a different perspective. History often repeats itself; for those feeling despondent about current affairs, I would say, ‘Imagine being in 1915, with the war dragging on and countless young lives lost. But we survived.’\u201d<\/p>\n
Martel’s fascination with profound existential questions traces back to his college philosophy studies, where he was invigorated by discussions about beauty, justice, and reality. In contrast, he found the literature courses he took to often lack depth, sometimes appearing to be mere entertainment. \u201cWhen I read Percy Bysshe Shelley write about a flower,\u201d he recalls with a grimace, \u201cI thought it was trivial compared to the profound question of God’s perfection and existence. It intrigued me, but I wanted to express these ideas through art.\u201d<\/p>\n
He acknowledges that he eventually discovered writers he admired more than Shelley, including Joseph Conrad, Virginia Woolf, and Willa Cather, who addressed more substantial themes. \u201cI realized that the written word holds immense potential. There is so much to explore through storytelling, which is more expansive than philosophy. This led me to pursue big questions, adding value to my artistic endeavors.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before “Life of Pi,” Martel had released two prior works, “The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios,” a collection of short stories, and “Self,” both of which received positive reviews but modest sales. He never anticipated that a narrative about a boy stranded at sea with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker would transform his career. \u201cI thought, this is a book about faith, without sarcasm or irony. It\u2019s not a commentary on patriarchy, and it involves animals, which are typically found in children’s literature rather than adult fiction. I even defend zoos, which are often viewed unfavorably by urban readers. I figured this book would fail.\u201d<\/p>\n
Instead, it resonated with readers, who found its themes of relationships and connection compelling.
