Despite her ambitions, Jodie\u2019s family created an environment where her passion for sports felt completely normal. Her supportive mother provided emotional backing, while her grandparents celebrated her achievements with outings after victories. Weekends were often spent training with her father, followed by meals and watching Britain\u2019s Got Talent together.<\/p>\n
Her father, who also served as a major source of inspiration, was a contestant on the original Gladiators series and participated in various physical challenges, including mixed martial arts and the World Coal Carrying Championships. Jodie fondly recalls a moment when he realized that she would pursue a career in sports after witnessing her determination as she ran around the kitchen with a sack of carrots on her back, imitating him.<\/p>\n
Although it was uncommon for girls to engage in traditionally male-dominated sports, her father never discouraged her enthusiasm. In high school, Jodie noticed the lack of girls sharing her interests, as many preferred hockey or netball, while she thrived in physical confrontations. This led her to explore other sports like football and ballet, but nothing resonated with her until she discovered rugby.<\/p>\n
Initially, Jodie faced obstacles in playing rugby due to her profound deafness and the risks associated with contact sports, as advised by doctors. However, after watching her younger brother play and with her parents’ eventual support, she was allowed to participate if she wore a scrum cap. This breakthrough marked the beginning of a successful rugby career, and she takes pride in overcoming barriers as a deaf athlete. One of her most significant achievements was earning her first cap for England.<\/p>\n
When auditions for new Gladiators were announced, Jodie applied on a whim, not expecting much. After attending a trial and discussing her aspirations with producers, she expressed a desire to inspire other young people, particularly those with disabilities, to believe in themselves. Her passion resonated, leading to her role as Fury.<\/p>\n
The name Fury reflects her competitive nature, which emerges during challenges, though outside of those moments, she is described as shy and relaxed. She acknowledges that projecting confidence requires effort, often likening it to a ‘fake-it-till-you-make-it’ approach.<\/p>\n
Her first experience of being recognized occurred while she was out for milk, sporting a sling for an injured shoulder and dressed casually in pajamas. To her surprise, she was greeted by excited children who recognized her as Fury, a heartwarming experience that reminded her of her roots and kept her grounded despite her newfound fame.<\/p>\n
Tragically, Jodie\u2019s father passed away unexpectedly the previous year, prompting the family to navigate their grief in individual ways. While her mother seeks solitude and her brother finds comfort among friends at university, Jodie copes by focusing on her goals, whether related to training or work, and by sharing memories of her father. However, she remains mindful of the importance of allowing herself time to process her emotions.<\/p>\n
