Serbia has reported the discovery of “highly powerful explosives” located near a pipeline that transports Russian natural gas to Hungary and other regions. This revelation has led Hungary\u2019s main opposition candidate to suggest the possibility of a “false flag” operation that could influence the upcoming elections in Hungary.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n stated that he had been alerted by Serbian President Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107 regarding the explosives found near an extension of the TurkStream pipeline, which facilitates the flow of Russian gas through the Balkans into Central and Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n
Orb\u00e1n announced via social media that an investigation is currently underway and that he had called for an emergency session of the country’s defense council.<\/p>\n
This incident emerges just a week before Hungary is set to hold a crucial parliamentary election, where Orb\u00e1n, who has been in power for 16 years, is facing a significant challenge from P\u00e9ter Magyar, a former prominent member of the ruling Fidesz party.<\/p>\n
The upcoming election presents two contrasting visions for Hungary\u2019s future. Orb\u00e1n and the Fidesz party are attempting to persuade voters that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine poses a severe threat to the nation, asserting that he is the best equipped to manage such risks. In contrast, Magyar and his Tisza party are urging the electorate to focus on issues such as economic decline, deteriorating social services, and corruption.<\/p>\n
According to Vu\u010di\u0107, the Serbian army and police discovered two backpacks containing “two substantial packages of explosives with detonators” in the northern region of Kanji\u017ea, located “a few hundred meters from the gas pipeline.” He informed Orb\u00e1n about the preliminary findings of the investigation, which he described as a “threat to vital gas infrastructure,” noting that the explosives posed a risk to many lives and could have caused extensive damage to the pipeline.<\/p>\n
While Vu\u010di\u0107 refrained from disclosing the source of the explosives, he indicated that there were “certain traces” that could not be revealed. He commended the efficiency of the intelligence services in addressing the situation.<\/p>\n
The timing of the incident, coinciding with Orb\u00e1n’s declining poll numbers, has raised questions and skepticism throughout Hungary. Magyar expressed on social media that he and the Tisza party had received warnings from various sources about potential events in Serbia around Easter, “possibly involving a gas pipeline,” allegedly supported by Serbian and Russian assistance. “And now it has happened,” he remarked.<\/p>\n
Magyar urged Orb\u00e1n\u2019s administration to cease spreading fear and causing unrest, asserting, “Hungarians have every reason to suspect that the outgoing prime minister, under the influence of Russian advisors, is attempting to instill fear in his own citizens through deceptive operations.” He added that Orb\u00e1n would not be able to prevent the elections scheduled for next Sunday.<\/p>\n
This skepticism was echoed by Mujtaba Rahman, a managing director for Europe at the Eurasia Group, a political risk consultancy. He remarked on social media that the situation appears to be a “conveniently timed threat of terrorist action,” aimed at escalating fears of military action against Hungary, for which Ukraine would likely be blamed.<\/p>\n
The political climate intensified in February when Orb\u00e1n alleged, without presenting evidence, that Ukraine was planning to disrupt Hungary\u2019s energy system and announced the deployment of troops to protect the country’s energy infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Orb\u00e1n has repeatedly accused Ukraine of deliberately delaying repairs to the Druzhba pipeline, which transports Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia through Ukraine, and has obstructed EU approval of a \u20ac90 billion loan to Ukraine amid their disputes.<\/p>\n
Rahman noted that both Brussels and EU capitals have been anticipating a possible false-flag operation by Orb\u00e1n, citing national security threats as justification to postpone the upcoming elections, which he appears poised to lose. “Could this be it?” he questioned.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, Hungary\u2019s Foreign Minister P\u00e9ter Szijj\u00e1rt\u00f3 specifically pointed to Ukraine, though he stopped short of directly assigning blame for the recent incident. “In recent days, the Ukrainians organized an oil blockade against us and attempted to impose an overall energy blockade… And now we have today’s incident,” he stated on Facebook.<\/p>\n
Following the defense council meeting, Orb\u00e1n suggested that the information gathered so far indicates a potential “sabotage act.” While he did not explicitly accuse Ukraine, he remarked, “Ukraine has been attempting for years to sever Europe from Russian energy supplies.”<\/p>\n
Ukraine’s foreign ministry responded on Sunday by denying any involvement in the incident, asserting, “Ukraine has nothing to do with this,” and suggesting that it was likely a “Russian false-flag operation aimed at interfering in Hungarian elections.”<\/p>\n
\u00c1kos Hadh\u00e1zy, a Hungarian independent MP and longstanding critic of Orb\u00e1n, expressed skepticism regarding the news from Serbia. “This is utterly transparent and pathetic,” he wrote on social media, adding, “However, we should not forget that propaganda still works, nor should we dismiss the possibility of extreme measures from the struggling regime in the coming week.”<\/p>\n
Szabolcs Panyi, a well-known investigative journalist in Hungary, also advised caution regarding the revelations from Sunday. He noted that weeks prior, he and other journalists had been warned by sources within the Hungarian government about a “Russia-backed false flag operation in Serbia targeting the gas pipeline to Hungary.”<\/p>\n
