A year ago, I lost a dear friend to brain cancer at the age of 53. He battled the illness for two years following his diagnosis. For a significant portion of that time, thanks to chemotherapy and radiation therapy, he was able to maintain a good quality of life. We enjoyed surfing, attending football games, and having family gatherings together. Coming to terms with his impending death was incredibly difficult.<\/p>\n
However, once his treatment concluded, his health deteriorated rapidly. The final months of his life were agonizing for him and his loved ones, with the last weeks being particularly heartbreaking. It was painful to witness his decline. During our last meeting, he struggled to stay awake, clearly in pain, yet he managed to thank me for my visit and joked that he expected to be “much improved the next time we met.” That turned out to be his final joke to me.<\/p>\n
Last weekend, his wife and four children scattered his ashes at one of his favorite beaches in Sydney. The reality of this loss still feels surreal to me. As the anniversary of his passing coincided with the Easter weekend, I found myself reflecting on him and contemplating whether the Easter story has anything meaningful to offer amid such profound grief.<\/p>\n
I have always found comfort in the rhythm of the Easter weekend, particularly in how the Easter narrative confronts darkness rather than avoiding it. Good Friday is traditionally a solemn day, focused on Christ’s suffering. The account of the crucifixion resonates with universal experiences of betrayal, injustice, pain, and loss. Jesus’s anguished cry from the cross\u2014”My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”\u2014captures a despair that many of us encounter at various points in life.<\/p>\n
Nonetheless, the sorrow of Good Friday sets the stage for the hope of Easter Sunday. This journey from darkness to light is significant for those who find solace in the Easter narrative.<\/p>\n
The crucifixion signifies an excruciating and humiliating death. More importantly, it illustrates that God, in human form, willingly endured this suffering. This concept highlights God’s identification with human struggles, suggesting that He shares in our pain. The narrative’s power lies in the belief that, through our own trials, God experiences suffering alongside us.<\/p>\n
German theologian J\u00fcrgen Moltmann, drafted into the army at 16 during World War II, served in a city ravaged by bombings, witnessing immense destruction and loss. After spending three years in prisoner-of-war camps, he returned home “shattered and broken.” His encounter with the idea of a suffering God ultimately led him to faith. He emphasized that a theology that did not portray God as the One who suffers would be irrelevant to those in despair.<\/p>\n
The Easter celebrations take a transformative turn by Sunday, when the narrative shifts to one of unexpected joy: death is conquered, and the one who suffered is resurrected. While the cross symbolizes divine suffering, the empty tomb represents the triumph over death, bringing forth hope and new life from seemingly barren circumstances.<\/p>\n
When I bid farewell to my friend for the last time, his comment about being better by our next meeting was a jest. Yet, reflecting on it, I realize it also conveyed a deeper truth; he held onto the belief in resurrection and the promise of renewal in a life beyond this one.<\/p>\n
Though death looms over all of us, the concept of resurrection has provided hope for two millennia, allowing us to view existence not as chaotic randomness but as a meaningful narrative filled with purpose.<\/p>\n
This perspective is encapsulated by British author Francis Spufford, who stated: “Far more can be mended than you know.” The essence of Easter is that the resurrection signifies a transformative event affecting everything, both now and in the future, where all that harms, corrupts, and limits life\u2014including death\u2014will ultimately be overcome.<\/p>\n
It brings hope for healing of broken bodies, for reunions with those we have lost, and for the resolution of injustices, loneliness, and heartbreak. The Easter message, despite its ancient origins, continues to inspire resilience in the face of life’s joys and sorrows, urging us not to succumb to despair, even when saying goodbye to a beloved friend who brought so much vitality to life.<\/p>\n
