The inaugural South Australian Aboriginal Land and Sea Ranger Conference has successfully convened over 200 rangers from various regions of the state. This event marks a significant milestone in the collaboration among ranger groups, which now number more than 29 statewide, as part of the federal government’s Indigenous Rangers Program.<\/p>\n
The conference, held in Hahndorf last month, was co-organized by the Alinytjara Wilu\u1e5fara Landscape Board and Daryle Clarke from the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal Corporation’s Yarluwar-Ruwe Rangers. The gathering fostered a vibrant atmosphere filled with camaraderie, laughter, and light-hearted banter, while also serving as a vital platform for knowledge sharing and mutual inspiration among those dedicated to caring for their ancestral lands.<\/p>\n
Many attendees were experienced young rangers, having completed three or more years in the field, while others were at the beginning of their careers. The recent announcement of federal funding for an additional 82 ranger projects across Australia is expected to welcome even more newcomers into the fold.<\/p>\n
Kim Krebs, the general manager of the Alinytjara Wilu\u1e5fara Landscape Board, highlighted the expansive area her organization oversees, which covers over 250,000 square kilometers, including the A\u1e49angu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) lands, Maralinga Tjarutja, and parts of Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara country. She noted that the early participants in the ranger program have now evolved into inspirational figures for the next generation.<\/p>\n
“They have gained experience and confidence, and they are now serving as role models for others in the community,” Ms. Krebs remarked. “The concept of visibility is crucial; we are working to create an environment where young people can see themselves in these roles.”<\/p>\n
The rangers are actively involved in conservation efforts, focusing on the protection of native flora and fauna, as well as the management of invasive species. Their work extends to safeguarding culturally significant sites, often supported by funding from both federal and state governments, as well as community-driven initiatives.<\/p>\n
In remote desert areas, rangers have played a key role in the successful reintroduction of the warru, or black-footed rock wallaby, to regions where they had previously vanished.<\/p>\n
Brendan Kartinyeri, a ranger from Meningie, shared his journey of becoming a role model in his community. After obtaining a Certificate III in conservation and ecosystem management while still in school, he has spent four years working with the Ngarrindjeri Lands and Progress Aboriginal Corporation, following in his father’s footsteps as a cultural ranger. He expressed a deep connection to the Coorong region, emphasizing its special significance to him.<\/p>\n
As part of his ongoing studies, Mr. Kartinyeri aspires to continue addressing the challenges posed by invasive species like European carp. He reflected on the changes in the local environment, recounting stories from elders about the clarity of Lake Albert in the past compared to its current state.<\/p>\n
The conference also addressed the issue of feral animals and their detrimental effects on the environment. Cameron Clarke, a Yarluwar-Ruwe ranger, has been working to gather data on shorebird populations and their migratory patterns. He recently collaborated with Birdlife Australia to protect vulnerable fairy tern eggs but faced setbacks when foxes destroyed a significant number of nests.<\/p>\n
“It was disheartening to see the results of our efforts compromised by predators,” Mr. Clarke lamented. “Yet, every small contribution counts in the ongoing battle for conservation.”<\/p>\n
In addition to monitoring shorebirds, the rangers also focus on the health of local turtles and fish populations, working alongside institutions like Flinders University and Glenelg Nature Trust to restore native fish species.<\/p>\n
After exchanging valuable insights at the conference, the rangers returned to their respective communities to continue their important work. Mr. Clarke emphasized the broad scope of the ranger program, which goes beyond immediate conservation tasks to include cultural education, language preservation, and fostering intergenerational knowledge transfer. Rangers are encouraged to pursue further education through TAFE, providing them with skills that can enhance their career prospects, regardless of whether they choose to remain in ranger roles.<\/p>\n
