Moira Deeming, a prominent member of parliament, has secured the Liberal Party’s nomination for the upper house seat representing the Western Metropolitan Region.<\/p>\n
Her candidacy was confirmed after all other contenders withdrew from consideration.<\/p>\n
Previously, Deeming had stepped back from the race when the party chose to support Dinesh Gourisetty, a leader within the Indian community.<\/p>\n
However, Gourisetty was compelled to withdraw when it came to light that he had provided a character reference for a convicted child sex offender, which led to another round of preselection.<\/p>\n
As a result, Deeming emerged as the sole eligible candidate for the position.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, she expressed her gratitude to her supporters, including state Liberal leader Jess Wilson, and emphasized her commitment to highlighting “Labor’s cold betrayal of hardworking families” in anticipation of the upcoming November elections.<\/p>\n
Deeming stated, “Upon our victory, I will dedicate myself to reinstating effective governance in this wonderful state of Victoria,” during an interview with AAP.<\/p>\n
Since her preselection by the party in 2022, the outspoken politician has been a frequent topic of media attention.<\/p>\n
The former educator was suspended from the Liberal Party after participating in a Let Women Speak rally in 2023 that was disrupted by neo-Nazi activists.<\/p>\n
Her expulsion from the party followed her threat of legal action against former leader John Pesutto, who was later found guilty of defaming her by suggesting a connection to neo-Nazism, resulting in a court order for him to pay $2.3 million in legal fees.<\/p>\n
Deeming was reinstated to the parliamentary group in December 2024 and designated as the party’s representative for the western suburbs of Melbourne.<\/p>\n
She had proposed to defer part of Pesutto’s legal costs in exchange for certain conditions, including her preselection; however, this offer was declined.<\/p>\n
The party\u2019s administrative committee subsequently agreed to provide Pesutto with a loan of $1.55 million to settle his debt to Deeming and avert bankruptcy, which has sparked ongoing legal disputes among a faction of dissenting Liberals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
