A notable highlight of the performance was the presence of the controversial contralto and actress Susannah Cibber, who performed several arias that are now often sung by different voice types. In this recording, Helen Charlston takes on a considerable portion of the vocal work, showcasing a robust and slightly metallic voice that remains consistently expressive. Additionally, the recording features a lesser-known duet-and-chorus arrangement of “How Beautiful Are the Feet,” initially composed for two countertenors from the Dublin cathedral choirs. Alexander Chance shines in this piece, demonstrating his vibrant vocal quality, and he also performs two arias that Handel adapted for his leading castrato in London. Hilary Cronin\u2019s soprano voice beautifully complements the soloists, adding to the overall richness of the performance.<\/p>\n
Whelan leads a dynamic rendition with the orchestra and a compact choir of just 13 members, which includes all the featured soloists. Their singing is light and precise, creating an almost conversational tone in certain passages. Whelan, a former bassoonist with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, is poised to take over as the music director of San Francisco’s Philharmonia Baroque, establishing himself as a prominent figure in the realm of baroque music.<\/p>\n
