With Bluesfest’s late cancellation leaving many attendees in search of alternative plans, those who opted to travel were rewarded with intimate performances from both domestic and international artists who had been scheduled for the festival. The legendary reggae band The Wailers captivated audiences on Sunday night, prompting an influx of fans into the pub, the adjacent street, and the nearby park.<\/p>\n
Local resident Janet Hanlan, who has attended Bluesfest for two decades, expressed her delight at the more personal atmosphere of the smaller venue. “It felt reminiscent of the golden days of Australian pub rock \u2014 the energy was electric,” she shared. “They wrapped up the show with ‘Buffalo Soldier,’ which had everyone on their feet. The buzz must have spread on social media because the turnout was amazing; the entire community showed up to join in the celebration.”<\/p>\n
Earlier in the weekend, the same venue hosted a performance by the Australian rockabilly band The Living End, which included a surprise guest appearance by Jimmy Barnes, who performed the classic “Khe Sanh.” Nearby, Deb Milgate was attempting to move past the $1,800 loss from her Bluesfest tickets. “I was just enjoying whatever music was available \u2014 there was live entertainment everywhere,” she noted. “It was refreshing to have the freedom to explore different venues instead of being confined to a festival until late at night.”<\/p>\n
Musician Zee Gachette, who was set to perform at Bluesfest with her band Muthastar, found herself on a much smaller stage at the Courthouse Hotel in Mullumbimby instead. Attendee Mandy Nolan remarked on the enthusiastic response Gachette received when she acknowledged the Bluesfest cancellation, proclaiming, “the show must go on.” “This was an incredible performance, offered for free, in a local pub,” Nolan added.<\/p>\n
There were concerns that the cancellation of the long-standing festival, which had been a cornerstone of the region’s cultural scene for over thirty years, would significantly impact the local economy. However, Matt Williamson, president of the Byron Bay Chamber of Commerce, reported that the Easter weekend was bustling with activity, similar to previous years. “The amount of music in the shire this weekend has been astounding,” he remarked. “Everyone has a story to tell about their experiences. It’s vital that we keep this momentum going. The town has been vibrant with visitors, and it’s clear that everyone is enjoying themselves.”<\/p>\n
