Starting Monday, approximately 8.4 million employees who currently receive statutory sick pay\u2014the minimum required payment from employers\u2014will see their benefits begin on the first day of illness instead of the fourth day. This adjustment was highlighted in an analysis conducted by the Trades Union Congress (TUC).<\/p>\n
Additionally, 1.2 million workers who were previously ineligible for statutory sick pay due to earning below the \u00a3125-per-week threshold will now qualify. This change is expected to particularly aid women, who are often in lower-paying or part-time positions, as well as disabled individuals and both younger and older workers.<\/p>\n
The TUC noted that this policy shift will alleviate financial strain on lower-income families, who have faced the difficult choice of either risking the spread of illness or sacrificing essential income.<\/p>\n
These modifications are part of the initial phase of rights being established under the Employment Rights Act 2025, which will also introduce new protections related to sexual harassment, parental leave, and the recognition of trade unions.<\/p>\n
The Labour government’s initiative has garnered significant support across the political spectrum, with a recent TUC survey indicating that 76% of respondents favor providing sick pay from the very first day of illness.<\/p>\n
This support comes in the face of increasing frustration among some employers who express concern that the new sick pay regulations and the broader Employment Rights Act are placing additional strain on already tight budgets.<\/p>\n
Neil Carberry, CEO of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, pointed out that businesses are already dealing with rising national minimum wage requirements, increased payroll taxes, and surging energy prices due to the ongoing conflict in Iran.<\/p>\n
