Many potential travelers are reportedly weighing the high cost of fuel against their plans for the long weekend.<\/p>\n
Welfare organizations have expressed concerns that the ongoing fuel crisis is hindering their ability to provide essential services, with volunteers also feeling the financial strain. Calvert noted that despite the picturesque surroundings, including a thriving Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre filled with water and wildlife, business has been markedly subdued. He described the situation as “very quiet” and indicated that the Easter period typically signals the beginning of the tourist season, making the current visitor numbers particularly disappointing.<\/p>\n
“It is significantly down compared to what we would expect during a normal Easter holiday,” he told ABC News. He mentioned that with the drastic reduction in visitors, he has had to shift the business into a “maintenance mode” as he awaits the potential start of the tourist season, which may not commence until June at the earliest.<\/p>\n
Calvert, who has operated the roadhouse for 18 months, indicated that while there is no fuel shortage affecting the establishment, the soaring fuel prices have led to increased operational costs, impacting everything from freight to supplies. He proposed a voucher system for fuel and accommodation, akin to one previously implemented during a previous algal bloom, as a means to stimulate tourism in the Flinders Ranges and Outback regions.<\/p>\n
Some travelers who stopped at Port Wakefield, a popular rest area situated about 100 kilometers north of Adelaide, reported that rising fuel prices made them reconsider their holiday plans. Dustin Williss shared that while the additional $70 spent on fuel made them think twice, it ultimately did not alter their decision to travel from Adelaide to Port Vincent for the long weekend. Similarly, Steve Potts and Henry Wallis acknowledged the impact of fuel costs on their trips, yet decided to proceed with their plans.<\/p>\n
Lauren Kilsby, Deputy CEO of Hutt Street Centre, highlighted that approximately 200 individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness typically visit the center daily for meals and support. Although attendance usually dips during Easter, she anticipated a surge in visitors as the holiday concluded. Kilsby noted that the recent spike in fuel prices has posed challenges for the center’s operations, particularly as some volunteers have been unable to assist due to the increased transportation costs.<\/p>\n
“Volunteers are crucial to our organization, and their absence is concerning,” Kilsby stated, emphasizing the need to find solutions to maintain support services. Catherine Earl, CEO of the South Australian Council of Social Service, echoed these sentiments, indicating that families are grappling with rising costs across the board, affecting their weekly budgeting decisions. She underscored that social services are not immune to these financial pressures, which ultimately impact their outreach capabilities.<\/p>\n
