The Chinese company responsible for the satellite images has not responded to inquiries from ABC News, while a US analyst has called for intervention from the Chinese government.<\/p>\n
Military experts have indicated that satellite images enhanced with artificial intelligence from the Chinese company MizarVision could allow Iran to target US and allied military personnel with an accuracy of up to one-third of a square meter.<\/p>\n
ABC News has reported that the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) has determined that an AI tool developed by MizarVision presents a significant risk to US military operations.<\/p>\n
This technology has the ability to identify and label military installations and activities across extensive regions.<\/p>\n
Retired Australian Defence Force Major General Gus McLachlan noted that military planners must now consider Iran’s ability to potentially strike targets as small as 0.3 square meters. He remarked, “We are witnessing precision strikes on targets like the US E-3 Sentry aircraft. This threat is one that our forces must take very seriously.” He added that the Australian government would likely view this development with alarm, as it raises the possibility of Australian casualties resulting from such capabilities.<\/p>\n
McLachlan further stated, “This is a perilous advancement as it grants Iran the power to precisely choose what they aim for. Any object left unattended for 24 hours could easily fall within the scope of an Iranian targeting operation.”<\/p>\n
Currently, around 100 Australian soldiers are deployed in the Middle East, including at facilities that were previously damaged in an Iranian strike in the UAE.<\/p>\n
US military analyst Ryan Fedasiuk, a public service fellow with the US Department of State, emphasized that AI-enhanced satellite images from MizarVision could allow Iranian forces to target US troops and installations almost in real time. “There is a real risk that this could lead to casualties among Australian and US soldiers in the Middle East. This is battlefield intelligence being utilized to harm US personnel, and it’s quite alarming,” he commented in response to the ABC report.<\/p>\n
MizarVision has reportedly been employing this technology to identify various military assets, including specific aircraft types, naval ship locations, and air defense system placements throughout the region. This level of capability previously required the extensive resources of a national intelligence agency.<\/p>\n
Fedasiuk mentioned that prior to the conflict, Iran lacked the capacity to accurately identify US military assets in near-real time. “Iran has historically had limited access to satellite capabilities. This technology changes that,” he explained.<\/p>\n
He has also published research on the military applications of AI, particularly regarding China’s People’s Liberation Army.<\/p>\n
MizarVision, established in 2021 and with 5.5% government ownership, aims to democratize access to geospatial intelligence, as stated on its website.<\/p>\n
In response to the ABC report, neither Fedasiuk nor McLachlan have reviewed the classified DIA evaluation. Fedasiuk noted that Iran appears to be outsourcing its targeting information to Chinese companies, marking a significant escalation in support for Iranian forces. “This represents a notable shift in China’s involvement with Iranian military operations against the US,” he stated, highlighting the value of the intelligence for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).<\/p>\n
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized the claims of a Chinese firm assisting Iran as “sensationalist,” asserting that the satellite imagery in question was acquired through open-source means and is a standard market practice. They emphasized that Chinese enterprises are expected to operate in accordance with local laws and regulations.<\/p>\n
Fedasiuk reiterated that this advanced AI capability was once limited to only a few nations and called for China to take action. “This information is now widely accessible; China has a responsibility to intervene,” he stated. He expressed skepticism about the extent of Chinese government oversight, suggesting that it is unlikely the government is unaware of the significant intelligence value this technology provides to the IRGC.<\/p>\n
In light of security concerns, satellite provider Planet Labs announced over the weekend that the US government had requested all satellite imagery providers to suspend the release of images from the conflict region indefinitely. “There are serious worries about the potential misuse of Planet Labs data regarding Iran, as well as an extended risk period for recent imagery,” a spokesperson said before the announcement. This decision follows a previously imposed 14-day delay on the release of Middle Eastern imagery initiated by Planet Labs last month, aimed at preventing adversaries from utilizing the data against US and allied forces.<\/p>\n
