Arslanbek Makhmudov has expressed his admiration for Tyson Fury, referring to him as “the professor” ahead of their upcoming match on Saturday evening at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. The Dagestani heavyweight, known for his imposing stature, displays a notable level of respect for Fury, a former world champion who is making yet another return to the boxing ring.<\/p>\n
“Tyson Fury is the master of both boxing and mental strategy,” Makhmudov remarked in his clear yet effective English. “Much of boxing relies on mental strength, and he excels in that area. However, boxing is also a spiritual endeavor. I intend to bring strength, spirit, and intelligence to the fight. This bout could be seen as a clash between the mental and the spiritual, and I hope the latter prevails.” <\/p>\n
Standing at 6 feet 5\u00bd inches and expected to weigh around 270 pounds, Makhmudov brings formidable physicality and strength to the ring. Out of his 21 career wins, 19 have come by way of knockout, showcasing his punching power, which could challenge Fury. Despite Fury’s reputation for resilience\u2014having been knocked down seven times throughout his professional journey\u2014his performance has somewhat diminished since his battles against Deontay Wilder, where he was knocked down four times across two intense fights.<\/p>\n
Typically known for his trash-talking, Fury has surprisingly maintained a respectful demeanor towards Makhmudov. “I’m not sure why, but he’s been very friendly,” Makhmudov noted about Fury. “I value this because we serve as role models for the younger generation. We’re not in our twenties anymore; we’re both fathers, which might explain our mutual agreement to promote this fight positively.” <\/p>\n
Makhmudov remains upbeat when discussing Fury’s strengths in the ring. “His boxing intelligence is exceptional. He knows how to adapt during fights, as demonstrated in his victories over Wladimir Klitschko and in his bouts with Wilder. He is undoubtedly a legend and one of the greatest heavyweights in history.” <\/p>\n
When asked about Fury’s potential weaknesses, Makhmudov continues to exhibit diplomacy. “That\u2019s why we are having this fight\u2014to identify his vulnerabilities and capitalize on them.” <\/p>\n
Reflecting on his previous experience in England, where he convincingly defeated Dave Allen last October, Makhmudov shared, “Sheffield was wonderful, filled with friendly people. I have a fondness for England.” <\/p>\n
Despite the likelihood of facing a 60,000-strong crowd favoring Fury, Makhmudov remains composed. “Understanding that my faith is with me makes the size of the crowd irrelevant. If God is on my side, then 60,000 supporters won’t matter. His support is a genuine and powerful force.” <\/p>\n
Will he engage in prayer before entering the ring? “I pray regularly, not just before fights. I pray five times a day, seeking His guidance for success. I have faith that His plan is always the best.” <\/p>\n
Makhmudov’s life has not been without challenges. He was born during the Soviet era, transitioning into the Russian Federation, and recalls a childhood marked by hardship due to the war in Chechnya. “My father worked as a bus driver but often went unpaid due to governmental failures, while my mother, a schoolteacher, faced similar struggles. Our circumstances improved significantly once my parents started a pharmacy business, leading to a happier life.” <\/p>\n
Now residing in Canada, Makhmudov identifies strongly with his Dagestani roots. “In the West, people refer to it as Russia, but I am distinctly Dagestani. That identity will always remain with me.” <\/p>\n
Having relocated to Montreal nine years ago at the age of 27, he received invitations from various countries but ultimately chose Canada. “Initially, it was challenging due to my lack of English and cultural differences. However, I adapted, and it was beneficial to bring my wife and children along. My daughter is now 11, my son is 10, and my youngest daughter is four. They attend school and speak French.” <\/p>\n
While he appreciates life in Canada, Makhmudov acknowledges that his family misses Dagestan. “I own a home and a car here, and the children are enrolled in a fantastic school. Everything is great, but of course, they have longing for Dagestan.” <\/p>\n
Although Makhmudov has faced defeat in two bouts, he provides an explanation for his loss to Agit Kabayel in December 2023, where he sustained a hand injury. “I broke my hand in two places during the fifth round and underwent surgery afterward. At the time, I didn’t feel the pain as my hand was numb, and I tried to continue fighting.” <\/p>\n
His second loss came against Guido Vianello in August 2024, but he reflects on it with a philosophical perspective. “I took a lot of hits to the face, and my vision became obstructed, which led the referee to stop the fight. But I believe everything happens for a reason. If I lost, it means I needed to learn something. I recognize that I must improve and work harder; there’s no time for sadness.” <\/p>\n
His family wishes he would retire from boxing, but he chuckles when reminded of a video where he fought a bear. “That was in Moscow about a year and a half ago. I informed my wife, but my mother couldn’t comprehend it.
