The astronauts aboard Artemis II are poised to establish a new record for distance traveled from Earth on Monday, as they prepare for a flyby of the moon without landing, subsequently returning to Earth.<\/p>\n
The team, comprising NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, is set to journey 5,000 miles (8,047 kilometers) beyond the moon. This will surpass the previous distance record of Apollo 13, which occurred in 1970.<\/p>\n
During the Apollo 13 mission, commander Jim Lovell and his crew reached a maximum distance of 248,655 miles (400,171 kilometers) from Earth before altering their trajectory. The Artemis II crew is expected to exceed that distance by approximately 4,000 miles (6,437 kilometers).<\/p>\n
As they embark on the sixth day of a mission that has revitalized NASA’s lunar exploration efforts, the Orion spacecraft’s six-hour flyby on Monday will provide the crew with unprecedented views of the moon’s far side, which were previously obscured during the Apollo program over fifty years ago.<\/p>\n
Additionally, the crew will experience a total solar eclipse as the moon passes in front of the sun, revealing glimpses of the sun’s corona. Flight director Judd Frieling noted, “We\u2019ll be able to observe the moon, map it out, and prepare for future missions.”<\/p>\n
Koch emphasized that while the mission is significant, it represents an important milestone that connects the past, present, and future of space exploration. She stated, “It’s a milestone that people can understand and relate to.”<\/p>\n
During the flyby, Orion will temporarily lose contact with mission control for about 40 minutes while it is positioned behind the moon. NASA plans to utilize its Deep Space Network for communication, despite the lack of direct line of sight with the antennas located in California, Spain, and Australia.<\/p>\n
These communication gaps have historically induced anxiety during missions, but Frieling reassured that “physics will guide us back to the moon’s front side.”<\/p>\n
The astronauts will take turns observing and documenting the lunar landscape through the spacecraft’s windows, with NASA’s Artemis II lunar science geologist Kelsey Young highlighting that they will witness parts of the far side never seen by humans before. Young expressed excitement, stating, “I can\u2019t wait for them to bring the moon a bit closer to home on Monday.”<\/p>\n
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, speaking on CBS News’s Face the Nation, emphasized that the Artemis II crew has specific observational duties during the flyby. He explained that they are equipped with various cameras to gather valuable data, which will aid future missions, particularly those aimed at returning humans to the lunar surface. The crew has undergone extensive training over the past three and a half years to collaborate with scientists on key data collection.<\/p>\n
Following their lunar flyby, the capsule is expected to take four days to return to Earth, with NASA targeting a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego on April 10, nine days after its launch from Florida.<\/p>\n
Young noted that the Artemis II crew will also assess potential landing sites for future missions, including the enigmatic Reiner Gamma formation, which is characterized by a bright swirl linked to a localized magnetic anomaly. They will also capture images of Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Saturn during sunrise and sunset.<\/p>\n
Moreover, the astronauts aim to recreate the iconic Earthrise photograph taken by astronaut William Anders during the Apollo 8 mission on December 24, 1968, which played a significant role in inspiring the environmental movement. There are hopes that the new image will evoke the same sense of unity as the original.<\/p>\n
When asked about Easter during a CBS News interview, mission pilot Glover reflected on the experience of being in space. He remarked, “In all of this emptiness, this vast universe, we have this oasis, this beautiful place on Earth where we exist together.
