This Jewish charity has joined the chorus of voices urging for the cancellation of the rapper’s show, citing his history of antisemitic comments and questioning the festival’s viability, which is set to take place in Finsbury Park, London, this July.<\/p>\n
Keir Starmer expressed his concerns over West’s booking, labeling it “deeply troubling” given the rapper’s past antisemitic statements and his admiration for Nazism. In a statement posted on X, the Campaign Against Antisemitism noted, “The prime minister is right to express deep concern that Wireless festival intends to feature an individual whose anti-Jewish sentiments are evident in his past actions, including releasing a song titled \u2018Heil Hitler\u2019 less than a year ago.” The organization emphasized that the government has the authority to deny entry to non-citizens whose presence is not in the public’s best interest, suggesting that this situation qualifies as such.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Conservative MP Chris Philp wrote to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, urging her to prevent West from traveling to the UK. Following the announcement of West as the headline act for all three nights, companies Pepsi and Diageo have withdrawn their sponsorship from the festival, although their names continue to be featured prominently on Wireless festival’s official site. Additionally, PayPal, a payment partner for the event, will not include West in any of its future marketing efforts.<\/p>\n
West has refrained from performing in the UK since he headlined Glastonbury in 2015. He has faced backlash for a series of antisemitic remarks, including expressing admiration for Adolf Hitler. His song titled “Heil Hitler” was released last year, shortly after he promoted a T-shirt featuring a swastika on his website. The artist, also known as Ye, has been suspended from X multiple times for his antisemitic behavior.<\/p>\n
Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, has also urged the government to prohibit West from entering the country, stating, “We must adopt a firmer stance against antisemitism.” Labour MP Rachael Maskell voiced similar sentiments on BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today programme, insisting that West should not be granted a platform and should be banned from the UK.<\/p>\n
Phil Rosenberg, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, criticized the decision to allow West to perform, labeling it as the “wrong choice” and called on the government to consider barring his entry. The booking has also faced denunciation from the Jewish Leadership Council and the Community Security Trust.<\/p>\n
In January, West took out a full-page advertisement in the Wall Street Journal titled “To those I\u2019ve hurt,” in which he stated, “I am not a Nazi or an antisemite. I love Jewish people.” In the letter, he attributed his past behavior to his struggles with bipolar disorder, describing a period of “manic episode of psychotic, paranoid and impulsive behavior that destroyed my life.”<\/p>\n
The rapper\u2019s planned appearance occurs amid a rise in antisemitic incidents in the UK. In March, four ambulances from a Jewish community service were set ablaze in Golders Green, north-west London, and in October of the previous year, two individuals were killed in an attack on a synagogue in Manchester.<\/p>\n
