The controversy surrounding the Karnataka Government’s implementation of a grading system for Hindi and other third-language subjects in Class 10 escalated on Monday. The pro-Kannada group, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV), has called for the immediate dismissal of Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, who has requested a reconsideration of the policy change.<\/p>\n
Governor Gehlot has reached out to Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, urging the administration to reassess its decision to transition from a traditional marking system to a grading framework for third-language subjects.<\/p>\n
During a protest in Bengaluru, the KRV accused the governor of being part of a \u201cconspiracy\u201d to enforce Hindi as a permanent fixture in the state. T A Narayan Gowda, the president of KRV, expressed concerns that the governor was acting in favor of a \u201cHindi mafia\u201d and emphasized the demand for his removal from office during the demonstration.<\/p>\n
The KRV criticized the swift response of the governor to a letter from a lesser-known group, the Association of Preservation of Local Languages, which voiced objections to the government\u2019s decision. The governor’s correspondence with the chief secretary was prompted by the association’s communication.<\/p>\n
In a statement, Gowda stressed that it is the state government\u2019s prerogative to shape Karnataka\u2019s education policy, asserting that the electorate has entrusted this responsibility to them. He questioned the governor\u2019s authority to challenge this decision and warned that any move to revert to the previous marking system could incite significant unrest.<\/p>\n
On March 27, Minister for School Education and Literacy Madhu Bangarappa announced the introduction of a grading system for third-language subjects. Shortly thereafter, on April 3, Governor Gehlot expressed concerns in his letter that this policy might undermine linguistic diversity and diminish students’ motivation to learn Hindi.<\/p>\n
The government maintains that this decision is intended to alleviate the academic pressure on students. Learners have the option to select their third language from Hindi, English, Kannada, Urdu, Sanskrit, Konkani, Tulu, or Marathi.<\/p>\n
