Although this correlation has been established, the underlying mechanisms have remained elusive. New findings shed light on this phenomenon, focusing on the body’s reactions to low-oxygen environments.

The human body adapts in various ways to hypoxia, a condition characterized by insufficient oxygen, often encountered at high elevations. Recent studies involving mice suggest that one of these adaptations may significantly influence glucose metabolism.

Researchers found that in low-oxygen settings, red blood cells preferentially absorb glucose from the bloodstream instead of using it for energy. Instead, these cells convert the glucose into a compound that facilitates oxygen distribution throughout bodily tissues.

“This research highlights the crucial role of red blood cells in managing diabetes,” stated Isha Jain, a biochemist at the Gladstone Institutes and the University of California, San Francisco, in an interview with Live Science. “This concept could be a focal point for future research.”

To investigate this phenomenon, scientists subjected mice to an atmosphere with only 8 percent oxygen, mimicking high-altitude conditions, while a control group was kept in normal air with 21 percent oxygen.

After several weeks, both groups received glucose injections, yielding remarkable results. The mice exposed to the low-oxygen environment showed significantly lower glucose spikes, indicating their bodies processed the sugar much more efficiently. This effect persisted even after the mice were returned to normal oxygen levels, suggesting lasting metabolic changes.

Upon further analysis, the researchers noted an unexpected finding. The reduction in glucose levels could not be entirely explained by absorption in organs such as the liver or muscles, leading them to hypothesize that red blood cells were also involved.

Subsequent experiments confirmed this theory. Reducing red blood cell counts in mice deprived of oxygen negated the glucose-lowering effect, while increasing red blood cell levels in normal mice resulted in decreased blood sugar levels.

Monitoring glucose levels in the body revealed that red blood cells in low-oxygen conditions absorbed roughly three times more sugar than usual. Additionally, these cells exhibited elevated levels of GLUT1, a protein that facilitates glucose entry into cells.

The absorbed glucose was subsequently transformed into a compound that binds to hemoglobin, the protein responsible for oxygen transport, thereby aiding in the release of oxygen during conditions of deficiency.

Experts explain that the increased production of red blood cells leads to greater glucose utilization, which in turn lowers blood glucose levels.

The findings may pave the way for innovative diabetes treatments. Researchers are exploring HypoxyStat, an experimental drug designed to simulate oxygen deficiency by modifying the interaction between hemoglobin and oxygen.

However, the scientific community warns that extensive research is still required before such treatments can be considered for human trials.

Nonetheless, this study encourages a new perspective on diabetes, suggesting that it should not solely be viewed as an insulin issue but also as a condition potentially influenced by the management of oxygen and glucose by red blood cells.

For many years, researchers have noted an intriguing trend: individuals residing at elevated altitudes, including regions such as the Andes and the Himalayas, generally exhibit lower incidences of diabetes.
