Mary Wansey has endured an agonizing 19 months confined to a hospital room in Canberra, desperately waiting for a spot in an aged care facility. “We feel trapped in a black hole,” she expressed. “It seems that no matter what actions we take or where we apply, nothing changes.” <\/p>\n
In August 2024, a misdiagnosed tumor led to the destruction of the 84-year-old’s spinal cord at the T4 level, resulting in paralysis from the armpits down. “It all happened overnight; I woke up paralyzed,” she recounted. “It was utterly devastating.” This formerly active and social individual, who had meticulously planned for her later years, now faces an unforeseen and challenging future. “Life in the hospital feels monotonous and sorrowful,” Mrs. Wansey remarked. <\/p>\n
Individuals over the age of 65 who develop a disability are not eligible for assistance from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Instead, they rely on the aged care sector for support. Mrs. Wansey’s family has lost count of the applications they have submitted to various aged care providers in their search for a local facility willing to take her in. “I cannot comprehend this; I believe the cost of keeping me in the hospital is far greater than what it would take to care for me in an aged care facility,” she noted. “I feel more like an object than a person, like a pawn being shuffled around.” <\/p>\n
Emma Mason, Mrs. Wansey’s daughter, has observed a decline in her mother’s mental well-being during this prolonged hospital stay. “The overwhelming emotions for us are powerlessness and disbelief that anyone could find themselves in such a predicament,” Ms. Mason stated. “As long as providers continue to determine who they will and will not accept, the likelihood of her securing a placement anywhere seems virtually impossible.” <\/p>\n
Mrs. Wansey’s situation exemplifies a broader issue known as “bed block,” which is increasingly common. Recent national data revealed that more than 3,000 aged care patients are currently occupying hospital beds. In Canberra alone, 69 patients are awaiting placement in residential aged care facilities, according to Canberra Health Services. <\/p>\n
Corey Irlam, acting CEO of the Council on the Ageing, remarked that it is “not unusual” for the advocacy organization to encounter cases where individuals wait for “two or three years” to find a suitable provider. A significant challenge lies in the fact that aged care operators can selectively choose which patients to admit based on their financial status or medical needs. “Are providers obligated to accept everyone? No, they are not. And that’s where the problem lies,” Mr. Irlam explained. <\/p>\n
At the heart of the crisis is a persistent shortage of aged care beds, exacerbated by Australia\u2019s ageing population. “It is estimated that about 10,000 new beds will be needed each year for the next decade\u2014an additional 100,000 beds overall,” Mr. Irlam added. “Considering that the average nursing home has around 70 beds, that is a significant number of facilities required.” <\/p>\n
In September 2025, Mrs. Wansey was temporarily placed in a newly established facility, Arcare Aranda, under a respite care agreement. However, her application for a permanent spot was denied due to the complexity of her care requirements, a decision her family is contesting. An agreement to extend her stay for an additional six months was conditional upon her moving to a smaller room, which did not meet her accessibility needs. “That room would not have been safe for me\u2014I wouldn’t have been able to move,” she said. “Every day, I would have to brush my teeth in the shower and spit wherever.” <\/p>\n
This situation, which Mrs. Wansey’s family described as “undignified and dehumanizing,” led her to return to the hospital in November 2025. While the facility claimed her departure was voluntary, her family contends that they felt pressured to leave. Their complaint to the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission has concluded without any negative findings against Arcare Aranda, but the family plans to appeal the decision. <\/p>\n
The ordeal has further eroded Mrs. Wansey\u2019s faith that she will ever secure a permanent place in aged care. Her husband, Jim, who suffers from cognitive impairment, is now also hospitalized after breaking his leg last year. “My greatest fear is that he will be placed somewhere, and I will never see him again,” Mrs. Wansey admitted. “Until society recognizes that we are human beings deserving of dignity in our later years, the situation is terrifying and uncertain.” <\/p>\n
Ms. Mason expressed her outrage regarding the aged care system that has allowed her mother to slip through the cracks. “I cannot understand how this is allowed to happen,” she said. “I am baffled that no one seems able to address this issue.
